Let's keep Trump out of the thread please. I can't really think of many ways he's relevant to guns weapons or tactics. :)

.38 caliber is about the best recoil to stopping power ratio iirc. .45 is overcompensation. Plus you only get 7 or 8 .45 rounds. Quantity is a quality all its own.

Sorry. That was me misinterpreting what Sheb was intending to make a joke about, plus my lack of knowledge on guns.

Aren't they meant to be mounted in small boats? I would think firing one even with a braced on someone's shoulder would be... disastrous.
Well...

big guns you say?

Eh, rail cannons were pretty much obsolete once bombing became a thing. You could just hit one of the tracks and it can't go anywhere.

I know, but it's so similar that I figure it's worth mentioning.

Also bombing is just more practical in general. The allies just developed  a 10 ton bomb and dropped in from a plane. That just makes Gustav look silly.

you only get 7 or 8 .45 rounds

I've only ever heard of .38 revolvers. Do .38 semi-automatic handguns exist?

.38 is actually a pretty broad category, and mostly not interchangeable either, but anyway they don't seem to be very common. I found this one in .38 super, and there's also some pretty old ones that use .38 ACP. You also sometimes see M1911 variants intended for competition shooting chambered in .38 super, but those aren't super common either.

There's probably more than these, but I couldn't find any chambered for the most common round called .38 today, .38 special. From what little I can see on the subject they seem to generate too much pressure inside the chamber to really be reliable without a heavy purpose built receiver and internals (your typical handgun is a bit more finicky than your typical revolver), and if that's acceptable to you there are better choices than that. Someone more knowledgeable can probably say more/correct me though.

My semi-auto is a .380, which is an arbitrarily different but similar caliber. I think the difference is the powder load.

For soft targets, I'd say 9mm is the best overall choice, for a good balance of stopping power, weapon handling, and ammunition capacity. Also it's extremely common and inexpensive.

Which begs the clarification of which 9mm round, since there are... no less than 20 different rounds with 9mm in their name.

Well, its probably 9mmPB, but there are other popular 9mm rounds...

I meant the 9x19mm Parabellum. Most commonly-used ammunition in the world, if I remember correctly.
