 Thank the Old Man and ask him to keep the book out for me while I go somewhere.

 Go to the captain and ask where exactly we'll be going, and what we'll be doing. I also add that if he tells it to me now, I can explain it to the rest of the adventurers and answer all their annoying questions, and he won't have to deal with it.

Tem:

Without looking at you, the chef holds up a wooden spoon and responds:

"Huonds ouff zee-a stuo! Breekffest vill be-a serfed shurtly. Tudey's menuo is beuons, becun, und beescuot! Nuo get ouout I sey! Bork Bork Bork!"

Rorman:

"If you see Henrik, tell him I need The Art of War back or I'll tear him a new one, alright?"

With that last message, you step out of the library, and onto the deck, but you don't see the captain. It looks like he went inside, but where?

[RAM]

Tem blunders out of the kitchen and tries to find a dark corner of the mess hall to huddle in.

[DolosusDoleus]

Tem:

You exit the kitchen and wait. After a short while, a part of the wall folds up to reveal the chef. Now that you can see his face, he is a very strange looking fellow. His eyes are completely obscured by big, bushy eyebrows and his mustache is similarly huge and obscuring.

"Breekffest is serfed! Iferyune-a furm leenes nuo, und du nut ruosh! Becun, beuons, und beescuoit I im serfing."

Ask around about the location of the captain, go to him, and attempt the action again.

[RAM]

Tem Nervously heads towards the back of the nearest line, sometimes backing away when there are too many people nearby. After a while she gives up and creeps around to the door to wait for the lines to disperse so she can get at the food then.

[DolosusDoleus]

Rorman:

You ask a couple of sailors where the Captain is.

"Eh, he's probably getting breakfast. Go over to the door marked 'kitchen'."

You walk into the kitchen, which is full of sailors forming a line at a counter with the extraordinarily odd looking chef.

"Yuou get a beescuoit, und yuou get a beescuoit. Nu, zees isn't zee-a seme-a is yesterdey! Yesterdey ve-a hed beescuoit, becun, und beuons! Tudey ve-a hefe-a becun, beuons, und beescuoit. Ih cepteen! Yes, yuour fuod is right here-a."

The chef ducks behind the counter and pulls out a platter of lobster.

"Zee-a lubster, in a suoce-a ouff lemun und buotter I hefe-a builed."

As Timmas walks out of the room with the platter, you try to explain your ability to be useful, but he just snorts.

"Me telling you what's going to happen won't change the fact that all of you have black pudding where your brains should be. I'll get buffeted with questions either way. Go away before I have you keelhauled.

Tem:

You wait a while for the crowd to disperse.

"Yuou! Zee-a ugly oune-a in zee-a curner! Yuou luok fery huongry, vhy ire-a yuou nut in leene-a?"

[RAM]

Tem doesn't say a word and joins the nearest line while trying to look small.

[Tomasque]

((Aww, I knew you wouldn't make it that easy.))

 Go to the book and look up more about the clockwork machines. Where are they made? Where are they used? What are they made for? Which ones are kept and which ones are exported? That kind of stuff.

[DolosusDoleus]

Tem:

Meekly, you walk to the end of the line. After waiting for a short while, you arrive at the chef, who peers up at you.

"Fery hoongry, yuoo look. Here-a, veeet oone-a mument."

He ducks behind the counter, returning with a bowl full of steaming stew.

"Hefe-a thees, it veell feell yuoo reeght up it veell!"

You return to the library and take back Ye Olde Almanac.

Clockworks of Sills Atoll:

The clockwork artificers of Sills Atoll are widely considered to be the most skillful of their craft in the whole of the circle of the world. Their creations have turned the once-backwater Atollian nation into a hub of commerce, envied by all others.

Each clockwork artificer possesses their own workshop, where they make their own creations. Most of them specialize in certain areas; one might work on kitchen appliances, another might work on security machines, another on childrens' toys, and each artificer holds the secrets of their craft to themselves and a select few disciples.

Strangely enough, the most complicated clockworks of Sills Atoll, such as the famed automotons, cease to function when they leave the island, and it has been hypothesized that this is due to some special force unique to the island. Therefore, only simple machines are exported, such as clocks, watches, locks, andsmall carriages.

On the island, however, the clockworks have largely eliminated most menial tasks, and the machines make up the island's mail service, streetsweepers, transportation, and other public services. Most notable are the creations of Grand Artificer Geraldis, sinister deathtraps which guard the First Silian Bank, Castle Atoll, the Grand Graveyard, and other important areas.

[RAM]

"Tem, food, thanks" Tem carefully picks up the food then trots to a corner of the room, huddles low, and eats voraciously.

Tem:

You sit in the corner eating, the din of hungry sailors eating, shouting, and shuffling about becoming deafening. As you dig into the stew, you feel the chef staring at you, even though you can't see his eyes. The stew is delicious though, and it reminds you of home.

[RAM]

Tem starts crying into the stew as she is eating.
