The most time consuming project is removing floors over a lake, believe or not, I have to remove them bit by bit, otherwise accidents just happen, and I hate to have items/corpses under the water.
*considers*

I suppose if you built floors out of ice, you could cave them in and have them disappear on their own.

But for a large enough lake it might eventually be faster to obsidian-cast the edges, drain it and then cave-in the floors and clean up. Maybe not in that order; washing logs into drain may be beneficial for moving them away later.

above my level computing projects are the most impressive to me. calculators or even genuine computers. new inventions and neat small designs as well.

i did automated (overcomplicated) obsidian casting and a long interval clock. maybe try my hand at a 3d-printer in ice or obsidian in future.

How would you create a 3d-printer? Which mod would you use?

Not sure you would even need one. Obsidian casting with dynamic floor hatch opening to drop things at just the right spots at just the right time; you could totally do that in vanilla.
Obsidian won't form in mid-air, so hollow stuff might be impossible.

The 3-D printer needs a method for storing blueprints and an index for calling them into use. Then there can be "design contests" for people to create new patterns that will use the 3-D printer.

Well, depends on whether you're opposed to hollowing it out yourself or not.
But then you'd have to seal it back off with a construction.

Well, maybe you could do a final cast on some sacrificial hatches:
Code: [Select]
__ __
██₵██
█   █
█_ _█
██₵██
__X__
Bottom first, then the top.

Not very mega, but I made a large arena style thing underground, leading to a candy spire, with a maze and cages full of dangerous animals to clear out the weak clowns and smalls rooms with dwarven squads stationed so every way to get to my fort led you through at least two squads, each headed by a legendary dwarf wielding an artifact. After this was my militia, backed up by every hunter in the fort, numbering forty crossbow dwarves and thirty spear or axe dwarves. Each hunter would've had a dog assigned to them, and a lot of the militia too. Behind that was a loooong hallway with a pair of ballista behind fortifications at the end. Finally was a simple bridge that'd seal up the entrance to the arena, so nothing could get in or out. Everyone died in the fight, sadly, except one bronze colossus who kept smushing clowns and staying in the spot because he lost his legs.

I like how you consider this 'not very mega'.

It's epic and unbelievably dwarven. I think "not very mega" comes from the fact that it's not a big construction.

Not very mega, but I made a large arena style thing underground, leading to a candy spire, <snip>

I have been doing the arena thing too; usually I just dig a direct tunnel from the candy spire to fort's main meeting hall, and build the arena thingy at the halfway point. There my militia either holds the line, or the whole fortress falls.

My most mega building project must still be the one time I converted the whole first cavern level to a Dwarven Garden of Delights, with a gem-windowed residential skyscraper housing the citizens in sinful luxury.

I'm not counting the one accidental large project where I made a reverse Spinal Tap-like scaling error with an invader drop chute... and ended up with a 13 400 cubic Urist pressurized magma chamber.

Obsidian tower. Build an empty tower then fill it with obsidian and tear down the outside so you can have it all engraved.

My go to
Spoiler: megaproject (click to show/hide)
used to be a spiral shaped walkway hanging over a 20+ z-level pit of doom that can be locked down at will with a walkway on the z-level above to give my crossbowdwarves practice. But ever since the ranged nerf to projectiles and the changes to gait and jumping, its been infeasible to do and not every effective at taking out sieges overall.

Spoiler: This design (click to show/hide)
has taken over that spot, but its more for crossbowdwarf support firepower rather than relying solely on crossbowdwarves.

Still some of my favorites are over elaborate magma filled entryways into a crypt/ tomb area (very stylish and very dorfy).
Spoiler: like so (click to show/hide)

Then of course there is the magma pump stack with elaborate draining system, and the well double cistern that draws water from the caverns into my hospital. But those I consider more of a necessity rather than a megaproject.

My current favorite is my extra large
Spoiler: obsidianizer (click to show/hide)
, meant for dealing with HFS and other nasty forgotten beasts, but it has not been battle tested.

These are all rather old designs mind you, I've not touched the game in a while.

Working on pressurizing my local magma supply enough to have not only functional landmines but also an effective, rapid, map-wide-magma-flood-inducing sorta system. Tired of sorting out the nice metals from the goblinite.

I've continually attempted to create the Tower of Babel, but that's about it.

Turns out, dorfs don't much care for kipping outside whilst their insane overseer attempts to build a tower into the heavens.

Make a minecart track, from the candy level, to your forges. All the way from the bottom of the world to the surface.

Bonus: Make it automated, so that the dwarves can just push the cart (or ride it) and don't have to guide it.
Superbonus: Make it on the same track, in such a way that friction control turns off and the rollers turn on when the cart is going up and the reverse when the cart is going down.
