« on: January 29, 2017, 11:35:16 am »

what is your favorite pointless thing youve had your dwarves do? Me? I've never had a fort live stably enough for me to consider it. nobodys good at anything and they always die because fish are extinct for some reason

I am currently making a tower out of dog soap, like the days of old.

Just dog soap, no other kind of soap

In Doomforests I built two huge brass towers in front of the fortress. I also built a huge pixel art of my personal symbol out front.

In Murderflood I built another huge brass tower over the depot, which took over 3000 brass bars.

I like brass.

Im working on making Orthanc, Saruman's tower from LOTR.  Its going slow... Im in a reanimating biome, but the scorched earth landscape adds to the theme.  The tower was described to be made of black stone.  Would obsidian be the most fitting stone to use?

Of course

Anything but obsidian would be shameful.

I've always been a huge fan of building a ridiculous over-sized keep on the surface of the world.

I've especially become interested in building a fully fledged town for humans, elves, goblins and such who decide to live as citizens in buildings surrounding the outside of the keep.

I dug a hole, but left a pillar in the middle. The hole got deep, and the pillar got tall.

While my dwarves dug, I added all sorts of interesting features. The top of the pillar was connected to the world proper with a drawbridge and a stone tower was built on it. A massive dining room around the whole pit was made, with glass windows allowing dwarves to look outside. Large living districts were built: it was beautiful. There was very little in ways of transportations between levels; the central staircase through the pillar was the favored way.

Then I tried to ward off an attack and discovered all my guards had gotten cave-adapted. Yay.

I'm considering making a massive South-American inspired jungle fort with my modded kobold race now. Anyone have any tips?

Giant pyramid of blood sacrifices seems a natural fit.

Also, once you get a jaguar man resident/captive, worship them as a god.

Make your kobolds carve a lot of suns too. Have your soldiers wear cottons vests, obsidian short swords, and leather armor made from the skins of your sacrifices.

The most time consuming project is removing floors over a lake, believe or not, I have to remove them bit by bit, otherwise accidents just happen, and I hate to have items/corpses under the water.

Really depends on the site.  Although this is less of a Megaproject and more of a challenge, I'm fond of building a Fortress entirely within the Caverns.  No prep time or other setup, just dig straight into Cavern 1 and survive.

I forgot my best and most famous megaproject! In Bastiongate I built a wall around hell. Then I floored over the pits. Then I flooded the place to the ceiling with water from the third cavern. Then I drained the whole thing, uncovered the pits (for ambience) and modded blood thorns to grow in hell.

And grow they did. With sheer dwarven might and ingenuity I turned hell into the fourth cavern. Dwarves could walk there safe from all harm. I even built a GCS-based webbing trap into the wall so I could catch demons. I made a demon ranching operation!

The most time consuming project is removing floors over a lake, believe or not, I have to remove them bit by bit, otherwise accidents just happen, and I hate to have items/corpses under the water.
The hardest part of the hell wall was taking down the scaffolding. If anyone slipped they went splat on slade floors. I lost three workers that way, and even the luckiest worker had five or six pages of medical treatment.
