Eh, it wasn't about people switching or the protest vote.

The big difference wasn't the people switching from "not Trump" to "Trump"; the biggest swing in the numbers was the people switching from "not Trump" to not voting.  In 2020, Biden/Harris had 81.2 million votes, Trump had 74.2 million.  In 2024, Harris has like 74.1 million (7 million fewer than the dems in 2020!) while Trump is about 76.7 million.

So Trump's increase could basically be due to population growth (he got 3% more votes), but "something" happened to drop the Harris vote by so much - dropped by almost 9%!  "Other candidates" got something like 2.5 million votes total, compared to 2020 where "other" got 2.9 million votes.

So all the talk of people "switching" is very likely nonsense - there were just significantly fewer votes counted in total this year.

NOTE: the numbers differ slightly from site to site so may not match what you find, but only in the 0.1s of millions range, doesn't change much overall.

We've already established that they're a bunch of idiots, so I guess it's no surprise that they don't understand how small groups of small numbers can add up to quite a lot.

I don't think it's idiotic to be passionate about their government facilitating the mass-murder of a civilian population.
And the way that US democracy is set up, small groups really don't add up to anything. If their group is not large enough to sway their district, then their votes really do not matter.
And that "passion" has only ensured that the mass-murder will get worse. The politicos in power are most likely to offer Israel full support and their chosen god-king hates Palestinians. The so-called protesters had a chance (admittedly not the greatest chance) to mitigate the ongoing conflict and instead chose inaction. They chose to not take the absolute simplest steps. And I'm guessing a great many of them are now regretting it.

Gaetz declines AG nomination, claiming the controversy over his nomination was becoming an “unfairly becoming a distraction” to the work of the incoming Trump administration.

Had a wee cheer for that one, though it probably means the Ethics report will never see the light of day.

Though it now opens the door for whoever was going to be the second choice behind someone who was alleged to have trafficked a minor for sex.

I've heard a lot of talk about Gaetz being a smokescreen for a crazier pick.

The US just vettoed a UN resolution for a peace deal, and Biden is still in power, there is little that is actually going to change here outside of the possibility that the US reduces its humanitarian aid to the region, which sadly is likely.

The USA was already letting Israel do whatever it wanted.

Wagging your finger at civilian deaths while sending bombs is still sending bombs.

Wagging your finger while fighting Israel's cause in the UN, is still fighting Israel's cause in the UN.

One would hope that him being disbarred (I think twice) would be disqualifying, and if not that a handful of Republicans have the balls to say having a disbarred lawyer as the top law enforcement official in the land might look silly.

If Gaetz was a smokescreen, it would be in the same way people put ludicrously outrageous content in their scripts so the censors don't see the less bad stuff.

Trump's second appointment is Pam Bondi, who is bad in a different way from Gaetz - she was his defense attorney during one of his impeachment proceedings, and pushed a fair bit of election denialism.

Pam Bondi named as the new AG pick.

Immensely more qualified than Gaetz, the most controversial thing I'm hearing about Bondi is her fanatical enthusiasm for Revenge Politics, having often vowed to root out and legally prosecute basically everyone who was even remotely involved in the Biden White House or the legal proceedings against Trump and his associates. Though I can't imagine that will give pause to a single senator in the GoP majority.

Wait a minute. Gaetz quit congress  for that didn't he?

Can somebody find out if he can just get back into congress now? Or is it no take backs when he quit, thing?

I'm just curious, ,because he'll probably just get appointed something else or something. Who knows.

Forbes claimed the way he resigned meant he'd also resigned the next round and a special election will need to be held.

The wording of Gaetz' withdrawal did imply that he expected to be filling a different, lesser role in Trump's White House.
Though his ability to do so may depend upon how the allegations against him continue to unfold.

If he gets put in a position that doesn’t require Senate approval, I think the chances of the report being legitimately released are zero.

Someone might leak it. That would be amusing. You certainly don’t resign your post to avoid it being released, and have a concerted effort by everyone on your team to argue against it being released, if the report clears you completely.

ABC news article "Can Matt Gaetz return to Congress after withdrawing as AG pick?" saying
Quote
Gaetz, for his part, has only expressed an intent not to take the oath of office for the 119th Congress -- which begins on Jan. 3, 2025, and for which Gaetz won reelection. He cannot preemptively resign from a session of Congress that has not yet convened or that he has not taken an oath to serve -- that means he is still eligible to serve in the 119th although he cannot under any circumstances withdraw his resignation from the 118th to return to the lame duck session, according to House rules.
and
Quote
Florida elections official Paul Lux, the Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections, which is within Gaetz's district, told ABC News that he anticipates that the primary for the special election to fill Gaetz's seat once he announced his plans to resign would likely be sometime in February, and the general election would likely be in April -- though he stressed nothing is final until the official dates come out of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' office.

So, what will a few months of Trump in office do to the group that threatened to release the report on Gaetz? They should have released it while they had the chance.
