Dems didn’t get rid of McCarthy though bro, if they brought the motion to vacate forward there’s no chance Gaetz’ crew votes for it.

GOP couldn't have removed him with 6 votes, only initiate. It's not even close. All dems voted to remove.

Uh huh, because he was a duplicitous shit to the Democrats, going back in his word several times. What reason would they have to support him, even if he offered them concessions he’d take back at the earliest opportunity?

Gaetz said he would bring forward a motion to vacate every day until McCarthy was gone if the first one failed. That’s nothing to do with the Dems. The Republicans playing musical chairs with their nominees also had nothing to do with the Dems.

I mean, it's a joke thing anyway because Johnson isn't any worse than McCarthy was, they're something like a 90+% match in terms of voting record and shit, and pretty much entirely on board with each other on just about every subject. So was the rape-helper, KKK man, whatever emmer's major malfunctions were, etc. The GOP's quite successfully winnowed down their roster into people that are approximately equally objectionable to anyone with sense or basic ethics, heh.

Johnson is operating under the same rules package mccarthy was, though. That won't change until the next congress is called or the house actually sits down and changes the rules, and there's only so much chance of the latter actually happening.

Gaetz and crew certainly won’t vote to remove their little veto until they can’t benefit from it anymore.

I mean, it's pretty unlikely to be brought to vote at all. The dems would vote for something that would neuter the ones that are incapable of doing much of anything except fling shit around in a heartbeat, and those same poo flingers would functionally break the GOP majority in the house if that majority actually went through with it.

If the speaker let that get to vote, it'd almost certainly cause even more of a mess for the GOP than the current farcical state of things, so... it probably won't go to vote. It's not impossible it does, but if the GOP had that much sense or care for the functioning of congress the rules involved would have never been enacted to begin with.

They have a hard deadline - ...
Johnson seemed to get roused into action by that hard deadline and already proposed a stopgap measure to avert a shutdown until January or April.

I specifically remember Maine not having red flag laws, so I read the law in the wiki and it seems that it only applies to people taken into protective custody after a psychiatric evaluation, and is not an actual red flag law.

If only there was some way to prevent this, like every other nation on the planet manages to do.

Perhaps locking up individuals who hear voices and threaten to shoot up army bases would help.

Making sure they don't have easy access to semi-auto rifles which fire rounds finetuned purely for lethality might help too, maybe.

...maybe.

I think Switzerland has plenty of people with guns, and they manage to not have constant shootings. It would be enough to treat guns like another very dangerous object everyone gets to have. A car. Require training, licenses, insurance, etc.

Training+license+mandatory insurance would be great, yeah.

I mean when you consider what happened when the assault rifles ban was in place vs what happened since it was allowed to lapse by Dubya and those bitches, it's real obvious what the problem is: nobody needs the ability to click-click-click-click kill as many people as fast as you can pull a trigger.

On the other hand, we also often run into the usual issue of the right-wing only caring about gun control when minorities start arming up to protect themselves from being lynched.

That's kinda one of the main moral conundrums here, nevermind the practical issue that disarming a population this big would be a giant pain in the ass: some form of sanity-checking NEEDS to be put in place, but it's hard to build a system where one's definition of a qualified and competent user can't also be warped for political purposes.

Well it's simple, you take all the people in protected categories and you give them free government mandated SKSes
