The general term that's been coined is "flaccid cyberpunk future".

We're not in The Diamond Age... we aint even in Snowcrash.  At best, perhaps there's been some Cryptonomicon stuff going on. But we're also a long way off the long and wibding road towards the Anathem universe.

(To randomly reference a 'continuity', of sorts.)

The problem with the UAW is that their main focus is, well, auto workers. Their usual jobsite is a massive plant with hundreds of workers, which really skews their attention if you're smaller. At the casino the UAW was our sister union (my part of the facility was USW) and I saw that firsthand.

It's less about the size of the local and more about anti-democratic shenanigans instituted by business unionism. They have the same problems at the auto plants, too.

Size-wise, I alone was a lead strike captain for about 200 workers, which isn't even all of the workers in my building.

As for the UAW chapter, we have 10 worksites in the local and my worksite employs more than 6,000 workers unionized with UAW. We had 48K workers simultaneously able to strike, in the largest strike in our sector of the economy in US history, and we were somehow not able to leverage that power into wages that deal adequately with current inflation, let alone a COLA, let alone a diet COLA. We are employed by the third-largest employer and largest landlord in the state of California and they are benefiting from our impoverishment. Our present wages make up 1% of their yearly operating budget.

UAW staff at my worksite had no plan for what to do when they were handed strike power and have behaved egregiously. We dropped the COLA demand on Day 4 of the strike. Now, a bunch of lousy behavior and abuse of rank-and-file and one garbage contract later, we are left scrambling because the strike has ended and our contract has been ratified, but there is no back to work agreement. In light of this silence from both our union and our bosses, middle management has not been informed about rights and responsibilities. We have a major production deadline in the next couple of days while all the workers who might complete the work for that deadline are out of contract and most are visiting their families on vacation, which is a recipe for workplace abuse and disaster.

Striking workers returning to work are now informing middle management about pathways for completing struck labor in order to smooth over the situation. This is, dare I say it, a goddamn mess.

Maybe it works in American, and thus for the US-based correspondent, but I tripped up over the article bit that says "The newspaper published an investigation in this month alleging <foo...>". Should be more like "The newspaper published an investigation in this month's edition alleging <foo...>" (assuming it's a monthly periodical) or just "The newspaper published an investigation, this month, alleging <foo...>".

And, to me, that attracts my attention more than a lying politician, actually. Shouldn't do, but it does have a bit of "It must be Tuesday a day of the week ending in 'Y'..." to it. Would be funny if there's enough backlash to force an electoral redo/keep the seat as is until officially sorted. Doubt it'll happen, but the cascading effects upon other candidates'/incumbants' honesty levels would be funny to watch.

In no way is this story going away, of that you can be sure.
The real question becomes "what can be done about it?"
Thankfully, Mr. Liar apparently also lied about his campaign finances.
If you are dishonest to a bunch of NYC survivors of 9/11, dunno if they can stop you.
If you are dishonest about Campaign Finances in New York...you're fucked.

Looks like McCarthy will fail to get enough votes to be Speaker first time round. It could still feasibly happen, but five Republicans voted against him, and he could afford four if everyone votes and nobody changes their mind.

Wee bit embarrassing.

Edit: he did lose, 19 Republicans voted someone else, he currently sits 16 15 votes below what he needs.

Nothing can happen until the Speaker is chosen, a long day ahead it seems.

He failed three times to get elected, they start again tomorrow.

As far as I’m aware it’s Trumpettes who are refusing to vote for him, preferring one of their own instead.

They should pick George Santos!

More evidence that many of our "leaders" are still mentally toddlers.

Makes you wonder, though, what could be going on behind the scenes to make deals to get a vote.
