Re: the Oregon decriminalization measure...there are apparently some cities that have already moved in this direction, such as Oakland. It's essentially saying "fuck it, we're getting the police out of the anti-drug business". Will be interesting to see how it pans out in say, 5-10 years. Right-wingers are predicting streets littered with drug addicts and massive crime, but that's not surprising. When North Carolina was looking to raise the alcohol cap on beer from 6% ABV to 15% ABV, opponents were predicting a generation of teens "overdosing" on high-gravity beer and legions of workers too drunk to show up. Instead, we got a $2.5 billion-dollar brewing industry and no change to public health.

Probably far too radical for anyone. Not even sure how Portugal did it, but probably far less hassle than any individual state would get (from within and without). Never mind imagining a Federal sweep.
