So...between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, 1.2 million Texans voted in-person. I'm feeling a lot more bullish on Texas's chance to go blue. Which, if it does, it's over. Pennsylvania and Michigan could take till January to get a final tally and it wouldn't matter because it'd just be beating a dead elephant.

EDIT: Mind you, I still want to see the dead elephant beaten.

Speaking of Texas, in doing some research on state-creating I came across a little gem that apparently most Texans are quite aware of: under the terms of the statute granting Texas statehood, the state retains the right/ability to split itself into 5 separate states.

There's a lot of unclear parts, most importantly whether the split is self-executing or would require new [edit: federal] legislation and whether Texas's secession and later reintegration with the union means that the earlier statehood statute is nulled. But that would be a pretty, er, interesting response should a Democratic trifecta go down the state-adding path next year.

(Also an interesting question as to whether the state could create 5 reliably red states without making it gerrymander hell.)
