It should *also* be noted that white nationalists have been circling the protests in many states and often shooting into them. They're actually responsible for the death of some police officers.

Yo we got some citations for these? That is a big deal.

At least they took it seriously. It shows how afraid NASCAR staff and drivers are for Wallace's safety. I'm not into it myself, but from what I'm told he's the only current black driver in NASCAR, and people in the, ahem, "old guard" fanbase have been heaping abuse and threats on him constantly since the Kyle Larson incident and especially since the Confederate flag ban. There were even neo-Confederates flying a plane banner and protesting outside a race right before this all happened.

I'm not going to lie, at the back of my mind I wondered if it was similar to a Jessie Smolette situation.

I don't live near and haven't been to Talladega really so I can't say for sure how it is over there*, but considering how riled up Neo-Confeds all over the state have been over statues getting taken down I think it was probably a necessary action even if he wasn't already being threatened, the only current black driver in NASCAR, and NASCAR didn't have a lot of racist fans. Lot of racists out looking for a target. I'm sure it'll get spinned to hell and back as an overreaction, but whatever, they did the right thing backing Wallace up and investigating it. A fear for his safety was definitely within reason.

In other news, we're apparently getting a physical DSA branch in Northern Alabama? Not really something I expected, but considering that they've been pretty much my only reliable news source for the local protests and seem to be able to organize, their rising popularity isn't too surprising.  Socialism in the South is pretty much annihilated from history here but as far as I know of the history of the Alabama branch of the Communist Party is that they were opponents of the KKK and segregation. I can definitely see the appeal in current times, even if the DSA aren't communist. Also, the police thought they were head quartered in a castle (they weren't headquartered in a castle.)

*IE: if it's a really racist place or not. NASCAR's rep even in-state leans to yeah probably.

edit: I'm not saying that you MSH, are saying it was unnecessary, just kind of using your post to point out some of the surroundings reasons for this investigation as well.

The original stock car racers were prohibition-era bootleggers who needed cars that could outrun the police without looking obviously souped up, and eventually started racing each other.  NASCAR literally originated as a contest between federal criminals to see who was best at resisting arrest.  I can see the lost causer in there with the focus on rebellion, but the blue lives matter guys watching NASCAR need to get their shit together.

Eh, these guys only care about history when it lets them imply their enemies are the real racists / mass murdering scumbags / dictatorial totalitarians / etc. When applied to them History only starts being relevant about 20 seconds ago, unless it makes them look good to their fellows, in which case it's "tradition" and "heritage" and gets whitewashed to the point of being unrecognizable.

No doubt. I'm a little worried it'll get used as leverage for the idea that the BLM movement is overblown/ he's a crisis actor/NASCAR had to do this or they'd get by cancel culture/etc etc. The hateful only need one example to rally behind and they'll use it to dismiss all evidence contrary to their beliefs.

Worth noting that the driver had little (if any?) direct involvement in the initial report. To quote the Washington Post:

"Shortly before Sunday’s rain-delayed race, a member of Wallace’s No. 43 team reported finding a noose in the team’s garage stall and reported it to NASCAR, Phelps said. The sport issued a news release about the discovery Sunday night, and the news was met with outrage and condemnation by drivers and team owners throughout the sport."

Indeed, thanks to ongoing COVID rules there the driver isn't even allowed in the garage at all these days - they're situated somewhere else, eventually going straight to the car on the raceway before the race starts.
