Apparently we've learned some things about Trump's plans for his big, beautiful wall:
It was to be made of cement, with electrified flesh-piercing spikes on top and a moat full of snakes and alligators.

I really hope Trump's Sharpie drawing of the border wall shows up at some point during the impeachment hearing.

(He also wanted all migrants turned away and shot in the legs, but I'm sure one of our resident conservatives will explain how that's "better than what we've got now" and "finally some action on the border" or whatever it was, and that's a discussion we already know is pointless.)

It'll be an actual legit blueprint, but Trump went in with a sharpie to make the wall a little taller.

The moat full of snakes or alligators makes it sound like he's watched too many adventure movies, particularily one with moats filled with such stuff. Though there's no indication whether it was said with a sarcastic tone or a serious tone.

Seriously though, where the hell does he get those ideas.

I agree. It is unfortunate that people willingly believe false things because it makes them feel better. There are some people who will ask me why we need to know how chemical bonds work, or why we need to know what atoms are made of.

Well.. we don't.  There are clear and widespread benefits to that knowledge, but there are very few things that are actually needed.  For a straightforward example, did it harm you to learn the bohr model of the atom in school, or to think that breathable oxygen is double-bonded?

As for believing false things, I don't see why should I force people to be miserable when they could be happy.  We are all ignorant of reality, even those of us who are well educated and adoptive of science.  Failing to accept that there are people who find happiness in other ways is the root cause of a lot of hate, after all.

Because people vote according to their beliefs, and if you let them believe what ever nonsense most appeals to them, they'll eventually get locked into a cycle of voting against whoever last failed to fulfill promises the voters should have known were impossible. Then they'll descend into immutable tribalism, because it's more appealing than reality, and government will grind to a halt.

A group of people who do not agree on how the world functions at a basic level cannot govern themselves by consensus, because even when their goals align, their methods will be nonsense. If I believe we can spur economic growth by sacrificing a goat to appease the ghost of Keynes, you'd rather cut taxes into little bitty pieces and write numbers on them and use them as money, and we're surrounded by people who believe in crystal woo and the supernatural abilities of pet psychics, I have no idea what kind of legislation we'd put together, but I'd not expect it to work.

Frumple's got it right.

Communism/socialism have become political nonsense words to most, whereas Evangelical has been hijacked. It still refers to a specific group, albeit a very negative one.

From my perspective the meaning of the term Evangelical has been altered in the same method that the swastika was. The swastika has a ton of other meanings in a ton of other cultures, all of which amount to basically "good feelings". But we all know what we associate it with now. To me and the Christians I associate with an Evangelical until relatively recently was literally just someone who went out of their way to spread word about our faith. You talk to people about your beliefs in a coffee shop on Tuesdays? Travel abroad and talk to people about our faith? That's you as recently as like, the 90's.

Now the term is becoming more and more irrevocably associated with a hate group.

Another good example is the use of Nordic symbols like runes and Thorhammers and such.

If you don't look too closely at that, it's almost believeable, almost.

Anyways, I've gotta sympathize with Finland, it has to be embarrassing to have their President be in the room while that press conference devolved into an absolute farce.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/464088-reporter-asks-finnish-president-what-favors-trump-has-asked-for

Oof, that's gonna get asked of every leader that visits isn't it?

And then he turns it right around and implies it's Finland who is begging him for favors. Whaddaguy.

At this point you should know better if you plan a state visit to the US. It is worse NOW, but it's never been good over the last 2.5 years.

After fundraising $25m this quarter, more than any other democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders was hospitalized for arterial blockage and has canceled all campaign events until further notice.

What kinds of things cause arterial blockages? I hope he will recover

It's just a pair of stents, nothing serious as far as heart treatments go. He should be back in action within the week. Hopefully the campaign parries all the hysterical neoliberals demanding he drop out so they can stop pretending to like Warren over Biden into useful energy.

I would just put the cause as "age".  I often think that the founding fathers should have put a max age limit as well as a minimum for important federal posts.  There's a point where physical degradation outweighs accumulated wisdom, and it's bad for stability if your leaders suddenly become incapacitated (temporarily or permanently) due to health issues.  The probability of that occurring increases notably with age.

It's one thing that makes me annoyed at our recent election cycles - even if you like the policies, the odds are surprisingly high of a major health issue in one of 4 years for folks aged 70 or more.  I mean if you're more than 70, you've got more than a 13% chance of "aging out" within 5 years.  A 60 year old has only a 6% chance - so half as much.  50 years? 3%.

I wouldn't mind seeing a maximum voting age, but mostly just to watch the boomers go apocalyptic over it like never before. And, you know, to survive the climate crisis.
