To be fair Freedom Fries (AFAIR) were a welcome bit of levity in a dark time.  Nobody I knew took it seriously, we mostly repeated it (or mutations of it) as mockery.
It was, looking back, an early version of modern memes.  Particularly the ones making fun of out-of-touch government leaders.

Of course this version seems perfect for neonazi memes, and I'm out of touch, so who knows.

We all know how much Trump hates McCain, but this is really taking it to the next level.... the WH is making sure that a ship with the name USS John McCain (which could be named after his dad...) out of sight when Trump visited Japan. I'd have straight up said no to that because it's as BS as it sounds like.

The McCain was named after the Senator's Father and Grandfather, and later rededicated to include the most recent one.

Trump knowing that would be too much to expect, and don't forget the crewmen who were possibly looking forward to meeting the guy who can order them to go die somewhere, they got the day off because their uniform has hats that have the name of their ship on it.
