There's some truth to this. Having kids late in life can make things weird for your kids. Being 19 and having parents in their 60s is a different experience than your parents raising you in their prime.
Strongly agreed. My mom was only "pushing 30" when she had me, which isn't even that old by modern standards, and it was still weird. Plus she was the last of three children, so due to the cumulative age difference, both my maternal grandparents are now dead.

Yeesh. I genuinely feel sorry for y'all, then.
I'm not trying to reverse-slut-shame (prude-shame?) or anything, but dayum. When the main reason for not having sex is "Meh, what's the point?" there's some serious depression going on, imho.

You have out-slacked the slacker generation.
Why is it deeply important to you that people have sex? Sex is not actually that great.

As shit as it sounds, I can understand whipping your kids with a belt. (That's how I was raised.) But your goddamn hired staff? She sounds like a monster.

Great aunt.  EG--- Old as dirt.

She sounds like an old middle class victorian home owner, who had hired servants.  See also, "servant culture in the victorian period", etc.

Not defending it, as it WAS literally treating people like shit, because you can get away with it--- but it was surprisingly commonplace once.

Cause I'm pretty solidly sex-positive, and feel like it can be pretty great? And cause I see a lot of people echoing things I said and felt when I was in my early 20's, and then had an abusive marriage in my 30s, and often wish I could go back and have actually had an active sex life in my early 20s, when all I lacked was confidence and self-esteem? I would have been far less likely to have wound up in that abusive marriage, for starters.

Tell her you're just biding your time.
Oh man I kinda want to do this at Thanksgiving and see if anyone notices.
My grandfather once gave me a fairly round-the-bush speech talking about how "well, certain experts have said that according to studies, individuals blah blah...", basically that right now was the biologically superior time to have a baby and raise it. Distilled to its essence: Give us a grandbaby you layabout.

I was nineteen.
Eww ):

Really good points about the modern dating "scene" and the hassles of relationships or even hooking up.  I haven't bothered in a long time, which made it really weird when I got asked out out by a total stranger one day.  Totally out of my league, I would have thought.  That felt pretty great for a while, though it was also really weird.

Idunno, it's just so easy to think about the dangers and write it off as pointless.  It's also kinda stigmatized (recreational sex in general, even) so like...  If I really want to put that time and energy towards recreation, wouldn't a hiking trip be safer and healthier?

Relationships are very important but I have plenty, and I'm still jaded about romance.  Meh.

Getting back to actual political news, Dems flipped another House seat in Maine, thanks to ranked-choice voting.

Quote
Poliquin narrowly led Golden, 46.2% to 45.6%, after first-place votes were counted. But more than 8% of Maine's voters backed one of the two independent candidates in the race, Tiffany Bond and Will Hoar.

Quote
Golden won 50.5% to Poliquin's 49.5%, Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap told reporters Thursday afternoon. The flip means Democrats have picked up 33 House seats so far in 2018, with seven races still undecided. Democrats lead in five of those seven seats, all of which are Republican-held districts.

Exciting times if you're an electoral reform advocate, although this loss means that Republicans are now likely to view anything other than FPTP as a Communist plot to corrupt our natural voting essence.

That's just politics in general though.
(Oh, I am totally for this thing when it benefits me, otherwise not!)

Glad to see the hold on the house is getting bigger. That will make it much harder for terrible bills to get through. (at least without bipartisan support.)

No more carte blanche for GOP insanity.

Didn't the Republican candidate already sue over it?  So yes, expect attempts to spread it anywhere else in the country to be met with maximum resistance.

The only way to prevent Communist corruption is to drink all-natural Coca-Cola exclusively.

It already survived several lawsuits before being implemented: this is actually why they didn't use it for the governor's race.

Yes, but the matter was settled Maine law before the election. If he had a complaint about the constitutionality, he should have filed it way before losing.

But yeah, I expect you'll see the GOP put up quite a fight against it. I'm hard-pressed to think of a state/region where it could potentially help them.
Deep blue states, people are going to be more likely to vote Green, Socialist, etc. but they're also going to be ranking GOP candidates dead last.
Deep red states, they already have a lock on, why change?
Purple states, hard to say what would happen, but I feel like the Right doesn't "waste" its votes on third parties as much in any case (with the possible exception of the Libertarian party in some places).

Ohio's 9th district might be here in a few years. It has been solidly blue for a long time, but that has more to do with "Marcy Kaptur is an insanely popular congresswoman" than it does party, even if Clinton carried the district easily in 2016. When she dies or retires, there isn't going to be a single strong frontrunner to inherit the loyalty, and there are a few planks in the Democratic platform that are pretty unpopular here.
