Jokes aside, I have a problem with the idea of politicizing the supreme court from any angle, but that's also like saying I have a problem with the way the earth rotates on its axis. That ship sailed a long time ago, methinks. I'm in the same boat as weird though, this is a battle of ideology and I think concern about the purity/neutrality/actual competence of the SCOTUS is of zero consequence to the players involved.

I'm just saying, most of the Republicans in this hearing have gotten up there and talked for hours about how Kavanaugh is their perfect holy idol who can do no wrong, based on nothing more than some rumors they heard, and the fact that he happens to fall on their side of the political line. The Democrats meanwhile have done nothing but complain that everything was happening too fast, and too much pertinent information was being withheld. I'm certainly more sympathetic towards the latter, but at least Collins took the time and information she had available and made a reasoned case on Kavanaugh's behalf. It's not ideal, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Actually researching a person and making a decision rather than just chucking a vote at the right color, I mean. That's not a dig at anyone present, mind you. No sarcasm.

I agree, this is not how a functioning government runs. The whole system is a steaming pile of shit filled mostly with below average examples of humanity.

However, you've got 99 other people who are putting their names on the line with a vote. And then you have Manchin who is saying, "I don't really want to have to decide, I'll go with what everyone else wants to do."

Asshole, it's literally your job. Yes or no. Abstain if you have to, if its that tough of a position, if you're not sure, just abstain. But don't just swing with the wind.

Abstaining isn't really an option when things are this close. Not sure if it's even an option for this vote in the first place.

Garland was. The same hasn't been true of every justice that has been appointed by Democratic presidents. Sotomayor in particular was a very "identity politics" pick, even if she was confirmed fairly easily (due to the Senate makeup at the time) and has given admirable service since.
