However, the Bible does also support poverty as a virtue.  I'm not claiming that it's consistent, just that there is justification for prosperity gospel.

There's no discrepancy here. Go all-out with investing. You'll either end up dirt poor if the investments fail or you'll succeed and be rich. Either is good in God's view. Being frugal is the only bad choice here.

The most likely explanation for why these passages exist is because people's tendency to hoard wealth (probably gold and silver back then) wasn't good for the economy. You can't tax money people aren't spending.

The church's teachings promote what's good for the state, traditionally. For example the Catholic exhortation against contraception is in line with the states need for more manpower to fight wars. "alms for the poor" can also be seen as self-serving for the state/church system, since financial aid for the poor is one of the biggest economic stimulus you can do, and it's all taxable.

Last month, Oklahomanites voted overwhelmingly to legalize medicinal marijuana, despite a smear campaign that included a constant barrage of grossly inaccurate commercials playing on every local channel.

This week Oklahoma lawmakers signed the initiative into law, with a few minor alterations, including the banning of all smokable forms of cannabis.

The pro-marijuana party have since responded that this misinterpretation of the people's clearly expressed will shall not stand. The fight continues...
