Skimming Ocasio-Cortez's website, if she were campaigning ~130 years ago she may have been called a progressive liberal, or may have been on the conservative side of a labor party. I guess today that's "socialism."

Baby steps, I guess.

Looking over the Democratic Socialists of America party, they have had some low-level success. For example, the median age of party members was 68. Before Trump was elected. it's 33 now. And they've grown from 8000 members to nearing 40000. Which apparently makes them the single largest Socialist party in the USA in over a century. While they're still not in "striking distance" they are actually doing ok.

However, remember that Ocasio-Cortez only won a primary election. That crazy Tea Party Republican Christine O'Donnell who believed the government was creating mutant mice with "fully functional human brains" won a primary, only to go down in flames in the general election. She was also an anti-masturbation campaigner. Congressional primaries don't mean all that much.

Wait, so she thought we were giving humanlike intelligence to a creature who's entire body is several times smaller than a human brain?  And she was against this?  That would do more for science than the moon landing, totally worth the grant money.

Cortez won the primary in one of the safest D seats in the country (which is one of the better places for entryist groups like the DSA to push for ground, really). Short of something literally killing her in the next few months, she's going to be a congresscritter.

Also yeah, it's maybe worth reminding that most/all DSA aren't caucusing under the group's name. They're generally democrats on the ballot (and in practice and intent), and the overall goal of the group isn't third party status but entry and influence within the democratic party. Might make 'em the smartest vaguely socialist political group in the country, heh.

Scriver, can I ask which country you're from?  My impression is that the UK + commonwealth countries have similar economic problems to the US (inefficient healthcare, corporate control of media, rising cost of living relative to income) but its not necessarily true in mainland Europe.  I haven't studied this mind you, its mostly from Canadian/UK online friends.

I'm from Sweden (which, contrary to the popular image of it abroad as a socialist haven, is today probably one of if not the most neo-liberal European country), but the part about social democratism being corrupted by neo-liberalism is true for all of Europe as far as I know.

For example, earlier this year (I haven't followed up on it so I don't know if or how it went) we had the Swedish Social Democrats - our labour and workers rights movement's vanguard since the 19th century - openly talking about how, in response to a small, local labour union not giving in to a (foreign) megacorporation's demands, the right to freely unionise needs to be overlooked.

She thought Pinky and the Brain was a documentary.

Another difference is that the Tea Party was in full swing at that time, an equivalent movement hasn't manifested yet for the Democrats or is in it's early stages.

Man, the news is blowing up over Cortez, but I couldn't be happier! And Crowley is taking it like a champ as far as I can tell.

Speaking of blowing up, Justice Kennedy just announced his retirement. We're headed for a MASSIVE SCOTUS nominee fight for sure and the Democrats are definetly going to rally to try and take back the Senate.

There goes a man with all the courage necessary to end his otherwise respectable career with feeble acquiescence to a bully and a bigot.

I hope Trump nominates Don Jr.

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/anthony-kennedy-retires-supreme-court/h_e20ec0379730dd74a726bebe8e866146 I hope the Dems pull the whole 'elections matter' trick that McConnell pulled with Garland and derail the confirmation until January, because precedence and the fact that they did the nuclear option by changing the number of votes needed from 60 down to 51.

Democrats are in a worse position on this though.

I would still go total war, personally. Republicans set the precedent, not one step back.

Coming right after the public sector unions decision too, what a noble bunch of political jackoffs.

And according to Fox News, people have already set their sights on Roe V. Wade, which is a personal priority for Pence as well.

I also hope the slowdowning happens. Granted, this is because I don't like who Trump/Pence would appoint. I forget how the supreme Court works with 8 justices. Even though it was recent. They run basically as normal, right?

hard to see a way out for them with this timing tbh. whole nomination process will be happening in august/september/october most likely since the retirement is july 31st. there are so many bases loaded in red states that if all of the red state dems don't vote in favor they're probably going to have hell to pay with their voting base and not enough time to sweep it away, and a number of those races are already tossup at best. hard to go home to a 20+ trump margin state and defend refusing to vote for a conservative justice

clinton got 26.4% of the vote in WV, 27.2% in ND, 37.9% in IN, 35.8% in MT, 38.1% in MO. not exactly great margins to play left-wing in

I forget how the supreme Court works with 8 justices. Even though it was recent. They run basically as normal, right?

tied votes uphold the previous ruling without precedent
