Quick victory or anything like that is not going to happen, but we're likely to see progress again the Talibans in terms of territory under control. If that buys time and political capital for Ghani it might actually make things better.

Faster and bloodier MIGHT end up being less bloody overall ("The general who tries to save everyone, saves nobody"), but I am not a military strategist.

I have no idea which way things work. Then again this is letting the actual military experts handle it so... I guess it is a leg up over what Trump usually does.

I can't wait for this to blow up. :P
Quoting this for future reference.

Feel free, I'll be sad if nothing comes of it. But given the current fevered pitch

Spoiler: Latins (click to show/hide)

Jesus Kristus, människor. It was just a joke on Italian being a Latin language (The speaking of which Latin America was dubbed Latin from). Next you'll have an aneurysm when I insist Quebec is part of Latin America or something.

Spelling Christus with a K hurts my inner classicist. It's Ch, not K.
It comes from the greek word χριστός, which means 'the anointed / the salved'. Since classical greek has both a soft guttural Ch (the χ), as well as a hard K (κ),
Kristus just looks wrong.

EDIT: Blame the romans though, for not having a different letter for a soft Ch and a hard K

I will instead blame english. Apparently we still haven't ransacked the languages of the rest of the world hard enough everyone passively accepts as fact whatever butchered spelling we use is part of our actual language.

Hey now, turning simple phrases into pointless discussions of Machiavellian complexity is a time-honored tradition in American politics, and we honor that tradition here, dammit.

Apparently a person dress in a Confederate outfit who saluted infront of a statue to honor his ancestors had to be escorted out in a police car.

The part that surprised me was two things
1) How in your face the people who just showed up to yell at this kid who wasn't doing anything
2) How they shook off the blame for the riot and pushed it onto the police entirely.

Don't worry though the kid was kicked out of school for doing this completely legal activity. Said person is Anti-Nazi / Anti-Fascist who finds their attaching themselves to confederate history to be insulting.

Should I be linking? I am sure there is more to this, but I am more interested in some of the surface details.

Surface details like that the statue in question is in Charlottesville?

We only have his word that he was kicked out of Pensacola Christian College, incidentally. He may have decided to leave of his own volition.

I assumed it was there. Otherwise the whole issue wouldn't have been very exciting... NOR would the police officer be so disgusted that someone be wanting another incident to happen.

That is inappropriate in Charlottesville at this time. Kicking him out of school seems like way too much, but escorting him away in a police car is something that should absolutely happen for everyone's safety, including his.

Sure, but this is kind of like those two white kids who went into Howard University's cafeteria wearing MAGA hats and then were shocked -- shocked -- that the students took exception to that. If the best you can say about someone's actions is that the government is constitutionally incapable of outlawing them, it's a good indication that they're doing something really stupid.

This was either a deliberate attempt to start something or a colossal failure of judgment on his part. Or, as is most likely, both. I'm neither surprised nor outraged that he got yelled at and kicked out of college for that; just because he could do what he did doesn't mean he should have, nor that everyone is obligated to let him do so without consequence.

It was specifically done for HIS safety. Not for anyone else's. If the police weren't there it very likely would have ended up with him being lynched.

HECK if the police were particularly pedantic you could probably have arrested quite a few of them with assault.

Mmm the double standards of "consequence". Let the punishment fit the crime.

It isn't the fact that people were insulted and took exception to it that has me so interested in the situation. It is the degree to which it incited the crowd, how just standing still in confederate clothing saluting and doing nothing else just put a bunch of people into a near blind rage. How it got many of them to call for him to be lynched or killed.

I mean, do we know exactly what the reaction was like? Yelling at him seems entirely appropriate. Blind rage does not.
