For a very small sliver of time, at a very specific point, through means that have nothing to do with telling time and aren't right so much as incidentally looking like it. Also very much not how you want to make your own clocks work or look, lest people start infesting the market with broken clocks :P

... also just realized it's totally possible for a broken clock to be wrong all day, though. Just has to have someone or something moving the arms ahead of the actual time, heh.

E: Or adjusting the time to be offset rather than static, if it's digital. Though those breaking generally aren't right at any point anyway, now that bludgeoning that saying as become a momentary distraction, 'cause the numbers probably no longer display, ha.

Or if you're talking analog, the clock has no hands.

back ontopic. The Freedom Caucaus is up to their old tricks of extreme obstroctionism again. This time, aimed at the Republicans rather than Democrats. I REALLY, REALLY, hope that they don't pull the same thing with debt ceiling talks. Most Republicans really don't want the country to default, the WH at least officially (well, Mnuchin has said) that they don't want to get into a default, as for Trump, run a RNG, I have no idea whether he'd be okay with a default or not.

Or maybe, at least. You don't need an RNG so much as an auto-roller that checks again every day, with some amount of chance to also check when any news report hits the anything. Smaller again, but still there, whenever trump makes or receives a tweet. There'd be a fairly hefty list of conditionals, really...

So the statehood vote came back 97% for but only 23% participation.

Due to the opponents boycotting it....

IMO, Puerto Rico should deserve becoming a state under a President that isn't as horrible as Trump, or at least as clouded with scandal.

Or it may just be simpler than that. Trump may just have the memory of a metaphorical goldfish. (Because real goldfish have decent memories.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/04/14/want-to-change-trumps-mind-on-policy-be-the-last-one-who-talks-to-him/

Yup. Question now is if/how congress reacts to it.

Though in other news, just noticed mention of a neat little court case that is A) Almost certainly going to be appealed, and B) Appears to kick our immigration enforcement efforts right straight in the balls, spiked steel toed boots provided gratis.

Some court or another just (last few days, or thereabouts) ruled that it's legal (i.e. you can win the case) to sue ICE/the gov't over 4th (and 14th) amendment violations if you're jailed too long by dint of immigration detainer.

If we assume that the actual voter turnout would be 50%, and 90% of the new voters voted to not be a state, becomming a state would still win.

They'd still have to convince the Senate (or whoever they need to convince) that the math works in their favor.

Also, the hearing that Sessions is doing tomorrow is going to be an open hearing, so, it'll be very interesting to see what he has to say, maybe.

Aye. It's a good point, but I'd definitely note that, perhaps (probably?) unfortunately, the boycott is likely going to functionally delegitimize the vote even if the numbers are actually in statehood's favor regardless, if properly analyzed. Kinda' sketchy when looked at that way, honestly. Opponents of full statehood haven't so much won the vote as short-circuited appraisal of it. Kinda' spits on our electoral systems, y'know?

Looking at wikipedia, last time they did a referendum, in 2012, the turnout was 78% (which is amazing compared to the typical turnout we get countrywide) and there was a majority for statehood, but there were 500,000 blank ballots, which made the overall picture confusing. Also, the number of voters for statehood this time were 502,616, which is 300,000 lower than the previous one, but still.

Also, if they go statehood, they'll still have to do a state constitution and other stuff, I could see the opponents of statehood trying to sabotage it via the boycott route.

If you can't win the vote, do your best to make it look illegitimate.

Situations like these is exactly why referendum validity should be determined by percentage of total people that voted for the winning side instead of the percentage of people that voted.

So a referedum is valid if 25% of people vote yes or no instead of 50% of people voted in total.

Or whatever percentage you want that to be.
