Sadly, we've lost one of the greats. Roger Ailes has passed on to that great newsroom in the sky.
Sadly?

Sky?

That fucker set in motion a train that chugged along from Nixon, to Reagan, through both Bushes, and dropped a big steaming load of Trump on our laps.

Seriously, looking at what he was talking about back then, and where we are now? Fuck that guy, his death is great, there's no chance he'll help fucking Kanye or some shit get into office.

Quote from: Ailes
Therefore, today I'd like to talk about the process of getting elected to an office in the government which is responsible for our future, about the biggest problem we face as a nation, and about how business is "missing the boat" in helping to insure the continuation of the American way of life.

Ailes isn't responsible for that typo. It was 1971:

- manual typewriters

- companies employed low-paid typing girls who lacked an education. And/or every executive was expected to have a secretary for such lowly tasks.

- there's an expected error rate for any typist, so minor mistakes would be ignored if they don't compromise the message, and there's a risk of more mistakes on the re-done page.

- liquid paper wasn't a "thing" yet unless you knew about the one typist who invented it and sold it from her house in the 1960s-1970s. Typist girls were seen as replaceable drones who could be sacked/replaced if they made mistakes. The marketers only saw the market potential of correction fluid once labor participation rates and female wages made the "disposable typing girl" thing not viable anymore, and low/middle management were expected to be able to type.

Basically no self-respecting executive typed their own stuff in 1971, it was expensive, time-consuming and risky to re-do pages, and liquid paper was some voodoo shit only known to a secret typist underground.

(As an aside, then, does anyone else remember the pink 'liquid paper' to be used as correction-fluid with errors on Gestetner machine stencils? No? Just me then?)

It's entirely plausible that there existed multiple recipies for such 'liquid paper' correction fluid before one or another got popularized and went into production.

It's becoming increasingly clear that Jared Kushner (and possibly by proxy, Ivanka) are part of the Russia problem. The Trump admin is fast becoming a poster child for why you don't do nepotism.

We used Tippex (give or take it's ™, and definitely with the lovely 1,1,1-trichloroethane), the pink stuff for Gestetners (might have just been a generic spirit duplicator, in the "all hoovers are Hoovers, even Dysons" way, but I don't think it was, as it was not the "thin purple ink" thing but proper black sticky stuff) was specifically for the restoration of the physical state of mistyped sections of the wax/paper layered duplicating sheet, for retyping, that eventually would have the substraye wrapped around the ink drum to hand-crank out hundreds of copies at a time.

Sorry, just some nostalgia leaking through. Probably too specialist a memory to mean anything to even those old enough to have known pre-photocopier days.  You'd have had to have been in the niche zone between consumer (e.g. reader of fanzines, but no knowledge of their production) and someone who knew a professional printer who would reproduce their works.

...move along. Nothing to see here.

Yeah, sounds like a really specialist niche product compared to the liquid paper/whiteout stuff, or rather, a completely different niche.

This is true, but it's also typical that the voter demographics that are most important to the political parties vis a vis election chance (i.e. independents, swing voters, etc.) will blame pretty much sodding everything on the sitting president. Regardless of who is being actually blamed, what they did, whether the blame is accurate or a scapegoat attempt, etc., etc. Scapegoats only do so much, and they don't tend to pay out very well come votin' time.

Is one of the shakier things a party aligned sitting president is supposed to be doing, making sure that good events (so far as noted voter demographics identify them, anyway) are visible and loudly claimed (even if someone else did it*), and bad ones downplayed and as quiet as possible. Because just about everything will be blamed on the incumbent's party by swing voters -- not just the president, but their party, to a very substantial degree (relative the effect itself, anyway). So POTUS critter better be damn sure the balance is as much in their party's favor as possible, unless said critter wants to start seeing some issues as reelection time gets closer. Is one of the interesting things the GOP is looking at, really... they (conservative politicians in general) seem to be doing pretty fair at keeping shit on the down low so far as conservative media and news goes, but the problem there is that those folks aren't who win them elections. So far as electoral influence goes, party line voters and heavily politically aligned individuals barely matter, and keeping things relatively suppressed on their side of the spin is only going to do so much for 'em.

*As an example, you've been able to watch trump & co, in their normal shitty way, try to claim responsibility or involvement with Obama term projects which the latest administration had precisely sod all to do with, over the last few months. Job reports, that thing with whatever it is carson was being stuffed into and involved freakishly stupid financial reporting I've forgotten the name of, etc.

Given that Kushner is family, kind of hard to make a scapegoat out of that person.

Great, IS will be killing Americans with blackhawk helicopters soon. US gonna supply Saudi Arabia with 110 billion dollars worth of armaments this year, plus another 350 billion worth over the next 10 years. This includes 150 blackhawk helicopters, which will be partially manufactured in Saudi Arabia itself.

Since everybody knows that Saudi wahabism is the driving force behind IS and similar terrorist organisations, I guess it's just a 'waait for it' until some of the equipment makes it into IS hands.
