In a lot of European countries, PM is not just head of government, he IS head of state. Not sure on the position of the Norwegian king. If it's anything like our Dutch king, he's not head of state, he's more like the international (business) relations mascot. Our PM is head of state. Just like Angela Merkel. PM and head of state.

The dial-up access to the BBSes must have severely crippled the conversations, though, back in the '80s...
Nah, not really. Even pre-picture sub-56k internet was really damn good at facilitating discussion; it just doesn't take much bandwidth at all to transmit raw text, and the whole way-text-based-discussion-works is easily more solid than just about any other format we have for large(ish) scale discussion.
Oh, I used 14.4k (if not 9.6k?) connection to my ISP for my original Usenet sychronisation. But I was really thinking more back to Fidonet days (which I didn't participate in, not unless I touched upon such a resource through an X.25 gateway or similar, when I was still trying to work out my Kermit from my ZMODEM...), where much of the limitation was down to the overhead connection costs of the central core infrastructure over POTS, even if the end-users mananged their own financial costs of dial-in.

Merkel is not head of state. Just head of government. Germany has a seperate president which would take head of state title. Most monarchies have the monarch as Head of State while the prime minister remains Head of Government. It's kind of a quibbling thing, but still important to note. Head of State is mostly ceremonial except when it's given extra powers (such as in the case of most Presidents.) but Head of Government is in charge of legistlative duties and can often have more "real" power than the Head of State.

EDIT: I should say, most constitutional monarchies. Any absolute monarchies that remain out there (are there any?) would in fact likely have Head of State and Head of Government in the same person.

Trump tweet just reported
Quote
The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!

"So called" Judge? WTF Trump. He's an actual judge, are you saying actual judges aren't the arbiters of the law now? What exactly are you implying? He's basically calling for an abolition of the judicial branch and rule by presidential fiat now, openly.

And the guy (or woman, I forget the judges name) is a BUSH appointed judge no less (the Washington state one, if that's who he is referring to).

While Trump is taking the legal route so far, the rhetoric is on the concerning side.

Saudi Arabia is the only major one I believe. There's a bunch of smaller states that are as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_system_of_government Lists them. Although it lists the Holy See (Vatican) as an absolute monarchy, that's not what it actually is.

Worth noting that in authoritarian monarchies  the head of goverment and head of state might nonetheless be separate. For instance, Philip IV of Spain appointed "validos" who for practical intents and purposes were the ones actually doing the ruling -like the Hand of the King in GoT, for the sake of analogy-

I find it strange that it lists the Pope as a monarch. Most monarchies are constututional monarchies these days anyhow.

Despite Trumps complaints, the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State are complying with the judges ruling, which is what they're supposed to do.

The Pope actually /is/ a monarch though, as far as worldly matters are concerned. What else would he have been back in the time of the Papal states?

In the most technical sense, yes, and I'm sure the pious consider him a monarch of sorts, and I'm aware of the Papal States period, but I, a non-religious and pretty-sure-is-atheist person, just haven't thought of the pope as a monarch.

Nice play on words with awareness of political animals to whoever said that. I suppose it's probably common knoweldge though since the donkey and elephant have been used as party icons for decades now.

It may be a case of The Hill botching up an article, but not sure if this is saying that the DHS and DoJ are doing conflicting stays on the ban? The different areas usually act in concert, but they don't seem to be doing so here. nvm, they unbotched it, somewhat.

Well, this aphorism gets to the nub too soon.  You can ignore everything from "But" onwards as not necessary to the situation being described...
Quote from: Sun Tzu
If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame. But, if orders are clear and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers.

I wonder if I can find something to describe Trump in Suvorov's writing...

Apparently there's been a lot of infighting in the government re:immigration ban. If you believe WP, of course.
