Meanwhile Berkeley is on fire. Jokes on them as they have literally become domestic terrorists because of words wich might have hurt their feelings.
Quote
'My team and I are safe. But the event has been cancelled. I'll let you know more when the facts become clear. One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.'
He also claims that a Trump supporter wearing a Make American Great Again hat was assaulted and kicked while on the ground.
'This is what tolerance looks like at UC Berkeley,' said Mike Wright, a Berkeley College Republican member told SF Gate before someone threw paint on him. 'It's sad.'
The university stressed it did not invite Yiannopoulos, a right-wing provocateur who is gay, and does not endorse his ideas but was committed to free speech as it rejected calls to cancel ahead of the event.
Haha no way, I just wrote this a few minutes ago
It is amusing to note the parallels in how religious conservatives are usually more reluctant to conduct interfaith dialogues than religious liberals, much in the same way that progressives do not conduct interpolitical dialogues in Universities or the Media. We are all much alike in our flaws and virtues!
How about that

You'd complain that the White Rose was too confrontational.

I support the protest. We must fight against this upswing in fascism now, before it becomes entrenched.
The protest or the whole setting a Uni on fire just because some bloke spoke? Kinda sucks that the Uni, where free ideas should be, is instead a place where power must be consolidated or conquered. Seriously sad that Milo is still too conservative to be accepted at Uni without violence o_O
Dude is gay a/f

At the very least, there is surely a better way to voice your displeasure with someone, without setting the building on fire?

This can't be normal can it

You should be a professor on political science or something, LW, and I mean that in a good way.
Thanks I guess? I don't know much about pol sci or whether it's good or bad to be a prof of one lol

I actually agree, I've made posts about this before. It's just that Milo, specifically, is a bad example of this, since Milo does in fact go above and beyond the normal level of "discussion" to directly attack people by name who've done him no wrong.

I'm unaware of this, but would find it surprising given his lack of professionalism. Not really sure what he is professionally, but I still think at the very least that one should avoid setting fire to Unis. Before the arsonists arrived, a good deal number of students peacefully protested Milo for example, setting a good example versus the firestarters

Also worth noting that the last campus he showed up at, peaceful protesters against him got shot. So that will pretty effectively put an end to the notion of peaceful protest being of any use.

It's pretty much summed up in this anecdote. A transgender student went to see Milo's talk. During said talk, Milo flashed up a photo of the student, named them, and proceeded to describe them as an unfuckable mutant freak, basically, using humor at their expense which caused the crowd to burst out laughing. Luckily the student wasn't recognized by the attendants, but that was pure luck. Now, just imagine how that would feel for the student involved. They said it was the most terrified they've ever been in their life, and I believe that. Milo's tactics are purely designed to ferment hostility and controversy rather than to forward debate.

~~~
Also a goddamn ridiculous Trump speech today for African American History Month. He started talking about Martin Luther King, but he gradually segued that into talking about himself and how oppressed poor Donald Trump was by the media. If that's not a sign of narcissism I don't know what else is, he can't hold together a speech about an historical figure without turning it into self-insert fan-fiction.
"Peaceful protesters?"
6:00, Seattle police confiscate pipes, bats, hammers, flares and shields from protesters, as Anarchs, Socialists and Trump supporters begin confronting one another verbally
7:00 the event begins
8:20 Milo takes to the stage whist protesters begin hurling bricks, paint, fireworks at police officers
8:30 One of the anti-Milo protesters is shot in the abdomen
9:20 Police don't let anyone leave
9:40 Police let ppl leave but only if they remove all Trump related paraphernalia from visibility
1:10 POI turns himself in, claiming self-defence after getting assaulted, thinking the other guy was a white supremacist. Guy he shot and his friends disputes this claim
Seattle Times didn't name shooter cos he didn't get charged with crime in the end. Dunno, but this clearly isn't peaceful, and a lot of shady shit is going on
Amazing how "no arrests or injuries" becomes "beatings and the rioting" in LoSboccacc's mind.
I'm also amazed that LoSboccacc doesn't see the irony of a fascist getting driven out of a place with protest and unity is somehow worse than the fascist in question giving a speech in which he incites violence and isolation. Either he has some kind of mental deficiency, or he's pretending to have a mental deficiency in order to troll people. The first one is forgivable, possibly treatable. The second is not.
How about that
Wait, are you saying that outright fascism is now an acceptable position in the United States? That in order to be inclusive, liberals need to give a stage to authoritarian nationalists? Speakers who will then use that stage to call for violence and sectarianism?
No! I will protest NOW against the violence and idiocy of the alt-right, not after they have a foundation!
We cannot be weak here. Steve Bannon is on the NSC. The Alt-Right candidate won the election, and disruptive protest is the least we should do -- can do -- to overcome this trial. It would not be protest if it was permitted.
Remember folks, violence is always justified, as long as you're being violent towards those damn wrongthinkers.
To be honest I think what Milo is doing is actually designed to cement battle lines than it is to foster discussion. To foster discussion you don't go about it the way he does, by putting up anti-trans posters "trannies are mentally ill" around the campus before your speech. What Milo is preacher is an all or nothing "with me or against" me style of belief system. That's sort of the big problem here, he's not out there providing citations backed by research or anything, he's specifying an outgroup who are permanently not ok according to him.
I mean, if you turn up and put posters up "keep the blacks out of college" and that's your entire speech about how much black people suck, then that's not something that the college needs to support as "free expression", because it doesn't go anywhere, there's no reasonable discussion that's going to come to a greater understanding of race issues by allowing that. It's exactly the same with Milo's anti-transgender rants.
Ideologues rarely contemplate that there might be hidden nuggets of truth to claims made by extremists.
Is it a mountain made from a mole hill? Maybe.  Is it an elephant in the room like they claim? Maybe.  You will never truly know until you look into it.
For that reason alone, I dont want to silence people, even when I OH SO VERY STRONGLY disagree with them.
The US's progressive front is waaaaay too cooshy and comfortable with silencing people they disagree with, imo.  I really do believe it is a very strong contributing factor to the rise of Trump's Nationalism platform.
I mostly just think of him as a sort of Richard Dawkins for the right. Good at firing people up and respectably intelligent, but neither are likely to convince anybody.
Depends. Do you still support Trump today?
If no, of course not. Everyone can be wrong. We use evidence and reconsideration to become less wrong.
If yes, then it still doesn't make you a nazi. It makes you an idiot.
