This is a situation where... Trump is bad, and Musk is bad, but the situation wouldn't be so bad if Congress (house/senate were doing there job). You're political system is f'ed and has been f'ed for a long time before Trump entered the situation. I look at the senate and house make up, and I see very few people who should be positioned anywhere near a position of responsibility. And they were there a long time before Trump entered the scene. I don't understand you're political system well enough to give good comment, but I believe in 2-ish years you have a chance to correct some of these problems. Good luck.

The changes they proposed to the CR were to reduce spending and raise the debt limit. This is to provide an instant "surplus" available for spending, elsewhere.

This is daddy trump telling mommy johnson, that there is a better place to spend the kids' lunch money.

More specifically, Trump wanted to suspend the debt ceiling until 2027, ensuring that there would be no possibility of a shutdown between his inauguration and the midterms and allowing him to use the issue as a cudgel in those midterms.

This is why you don't submit to bullies: Trump is now apparently threatening the EU with tariffs if they don't buy more US oil and gas.  I can't help but think this is because he feels emboldened by his apparent success with Canada.

I guess we will just ask Ireland to start taxing Google and such then to pay for the gas and oil

Or just force them to like what happened with, iirc, Apple.

The party propping up Trudeau’s minority government has decided to support a no confidence vote though.

We could also just hold a reasonably small protest / demonstration in my home town to tell ASML to no longer sell their extreme ultraviolet lithography machines to the USA anymore, and sell them to China instead. That means, no more intel, no more Apple, no more Nvidia. They can't make chips without our machines.

How are people not getting this is Trump/Musk doing it?

Biden is just AWOL. So it's clearly not him/he's a lame duck. The dems in congress agreed with the bipartisan republican drafted bill.

Who else could be doing it?

Is this a strategically bad plan for Trump?

What really makes this stupid is that Europe has a massive deficit in the energy trade with the US. Western Europe already buys a shitload of US oil and gas.

It's not Trump or Musk.
Trump and Musk are just playing their part in the KGB script. The Soviets have finally won the cold war after all and destroyed America from within.

Don't be so... dramatic. Sure, Russian agents got high into the American government and certain fascist oligarchs got a lot of influence but countries do not collapse so easily.

BTW, I am far more worried by the heroization of Luigi Mangione by American youth than by oligarchs doing oligarch stuff. Left terrorism is not fun AND it can help fascists to solidify power.

It is a fight that is still ongoing. Authoritarian groups are trying to consolidate power, so they can rule as peers, each over "their" populace.

Yeah, it was wrong, but ....

Gen Z and millennials grew up with multiple active shooter drills and practicing what to do if someone brought a gun to school to kill.
Nobody cared enough to really do anything, but essentially say their lives weren't worth the effort except "Thoughts and prayers."

Except now that the shoe is on the other foot, and it turns out it can impact those in power, now it matters.
When they thought it could never hurt them, the people in power didn't care. Not their problem. Bulletproof backpack?
Now that it has got to them, all of a sudden 20+ years of shootings we've grown numb to from inaction should mean what?
Only when it is a rich man.... Otherwise another school shooting is just a blip in the news and then gone, forgotten. Too many to remember, but they remember the time it was a rich man.

"Thoughts and prayers...."

It always was wrong and it always mattered. Where was the concern of the powerful then? Why only now?

Luigi's been pretty celebrated by the entire political spectrum, tbh, and most age groups as well. It's been pretty remarkable how united the nation's been in saying fuck the guy he killed.

He's not likely to be inspiring violence of any specific political or generational alignment, just maybe a bit of CEO murdering, which, y'know. Signs point to there not being many tears spilled by the US public over that, ha.

E: Maybe if it ends up targeting something other than the particularly murderous industries, I'unno. Folks just have a remarkably dim view of the leadership of an industry that's got the blood (of hundreds) of thousands on their hands, y'know? What Luigi did more than just about anything was make that very, very clear to basically everyone, as opposed to just very, very clear to anyone paying even a little attention.

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-government-shutdown-12-20-24/index.html

The House has voted to pass a stopgap funding bill just hours before a midnight deadline to avert a federal government shutdown. The Senate must next take up the bill.

The vote was 366 to 34. Thirty-four Republicans voted against the bill, and one Democrat voted present.

The bill would extend government funding into March and includes disaster relief and farming provisions, but does not include a suspension of the debt limit, which President-elect Donald Trump has been demanding Republicans address.

Would require Senate passage at present.

White House says Biden "supports moving this legislation forward"
From CNN's Donald Judd

White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre offered qualified praise for a proposal from House Republicans to fund the government and avoid a government shutdown, writing in a statement Friday, “President Biden supports moving this legislation forward and ensuring that the vital services the government provides for hardworking Americans.”

“A government shutdown heading into the holidays would mean service members and air traffic controllers go to work without pay, essential government services for hardworking Americans would be paused, and economic disruption would occur,” Jean-Pierre wrote. “While it does not include everything we sought, it includes disaster relief that the President requested for the communities recovering from the storm, eliminates the accelerated pathway to a tax cut for billionaires, and would ensure that the government can continue to operate at full capacity.”
