Maximum, surely you understand that there is a significant difference between having a functioning AC in trucks, something that just about every car has, and stacking blocks of ice in your truck or constantly buying ice cold water are two very different things, right?

Me complaining that they don't have that very easily obtainable AC in a culture that is removing mandatory water breaks and goading their workers into working so hard that they are afraid to take pee breaks, does not negate anything else I have said. And everyone knows this.
I fully agree that there is a significant difference, which I have said all along. So, then, you agree that what you meant by AC to begin with was obviously mechanical air conditioning of the type we are all familiar with calling by that name, right? Since we're in clear agreement that "having a functioning AC in trucks" is not the same thing as "stacking blocks of ice in your truck or constantly buying ice cold water" or any other method used to keep cool before the invention of modern AC. So, then, what you originally said about needing AC to stay alive, which was in the context of UPS' trucks, was not including those methods, and was wrong.

Look, I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, I just want you to know that you've equivocated. It's better to just admit you oversimplified, not move the goalposts.

Folks: No personal attacks in AmeriPol!  :P

...but seriously, maybe just discuss stuff and not engage in the Forever War of asserting who is right.

I'm actually not even concerned about being right here, I just want him to be aware of the equivocation, because that's a pernicious problem with thinking.

Haha, that's fair, but I thought this would be a LESS politically fraught subject and therefore more amenable to the conversation than usual!

People act strange in arguments. I try my best to not think of anything as an argument, because if I get lulled in I start saying wrong things.

No, stacking ice in your truck would indeed be AC and would indeed keep them alive. That is separate from me complaining about the much more convenient AC not being installed.

EDIT: Are you under the impression that I said that UPS drivers would die without mechanical air conditioning? Because if so, you should have brought that up when I asked what I was wrong about.

Ah yeah I was flipping a coin posting about union stuff here vs armchair economics... I chose here because I feel there's slightly more political than economic influence behind the union efforts.  By that I mean it's all about "us vs them" rather than "how can we be in it together."  Specifically I was responding to the quote from the Teamsters leader saying "it's time to pulverize" the management.

I guess the way I see it is - causing suffering to get your way, even though effective, just leaves me wanting better for humanity.

but profit has totally and completely fucked the balance to the point where profit is driving inflation and depressing wages
It's all going according to plan.
they call it inflation when it's literally just ologopoly and price gouging

I blame the education system, not teaching people what inflation really is. Instead the public just says "the media says it's inflation, so it must be!"

I can definitely see the rationale behind the conspiracy theories about intentional degradation of the education system, even though I personally think that most of the decay is due to unintended consequences of well-meaning education administrators (basically NCLB regs... focusing on scores/metrics instead of students).

The education system teaches what inflation is well enough. The problem isn't that, it's that there's such tremendous amounts of propaganda effort and sensationalizing over the issue people get confused even when they've learned well about the subject previously. Decent education can erode easily when you're bombarded by horseshit for years and decades afterwards.

I blame the expensive education system for creating the inflation... :P

(But seriously, while I learned everything about Economics except the most important thing about EconomicsHow to get a job in Economics in college, I doubt the frat boys that also graduated from my college learned any of that. It doesn't help that even Economists can't agree on anything)

About 130 million adults in the U.S. have low literacy skills according to a Gallup analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education. This means more than half of Americans between the ages of 16 and 74 (54%) read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level.
idk dude I legit think there is something wrong with the US education system. It's like they teach people wrong on purpose so they have to believe anything they're told because they can't read or understand things that show them how fucked things are

Statistics like that are highly misleading. For example, many of the people included in that statistic are, in fact, speakers of a language other than English.
