A badass basketball player has been detained in Russia for political reasons.

In Ameripol news, she was underpaid - not in an absolute sense, but compared to NBA players.  She's in the WNBA which is severely underpaid, such that they often travel abroad to play for other countries - and in this case, got detained.  For "transporting" a personal quantity of marijuana. 

I'd link the broadcast I listened to earlier today, which went into detail about the NBA-WNBA divide, but the short version is that US WNBA players travel overseas part time and get paid fantastically more money - almost on par with their male counterparts- during the US off-season, while the men rest and recover.

Oh sure I agree with that.  I don't know why that article doesn't say, but the charge is of *residue* in vape pens, not a useable amount.

I guess if she was trying to bring actual quantities of weed on a plane I could understand, but they're not even claiming that.  Obviously I think this was politically motivated.  I think they particularly targeted a lesbian because Putin's regime hates LGBT people.

I'm 100% behind stopping the stupid clock change every year. I'm in the far west of a time zone, so while I personally would rather have had ST made standard not DT, I can get used to it.

I also laugh that the bill is called "Preserving Daylight Act" or something - it doesn't preserve daylight dammit, it just shifts it!  It's no wonder why simple concepts are perceived as difficult - if you can't even use words properly.

Also our local news has already confused people; they posted a graphic showing what sunrise/sunset will be on Dec 21 with permanent EDT alongside what they'd be on June 21 with permanent EST.  So one of our friends is upset that we're going to have late sunrise in winter and early sunset in summer... because people don't know how to graphic.  :facepalm:

tbf that happens in the 'states as well.  I was juror for someone charged with drug possession, who basically had breadcrumbs of heroin.

For what its worth, every leftist I hang out with (even a secret tanky) condemns Russia's shit.  It's only ever a matter of how much they mention America doing similar shit.

This seems like a reasonable nuanced take.  Do we have to pretend that the USA is being benign here?  The USA doesn't care about Ukraine, we happen to be helping for selfish great-power reasons.

I don't see the problem here.  But I guess in the lens of Twitter everyone assumes the absolute worst.

The basic shit you get is that NATO or the US fanned the flames of war by extending membership to Ukraine even when Ukranie wasnt being able to join it for several years, not counting its territorial issues.
