Bad comparisons.

I'll grant you the American Revolution might be, but:

Of course not. That's the point about hopeless & violent political causes: they can't win but people will suffer none the less. Maybe for years. All it takes is one completely committed psycho that is competent and you have a national tragedy on your hands.

Even if any real organization that could form is being broken down by the Feds, we may have cells or more lone wolves for years to come. I guess I'm slightly encouraged by the fact nothing truly massive went down at the capitol, or it'd seem they already had their shit together.

I think this may look a lot like how the Feds turned on the militias after Oklahoma City. They all wanted a civil war, what they got was fed to the woodchipper without a shot fired. Of course, that era led to now, but it'd be a decade or so of respite.

The fact I had to look it up to see whether it was him... Turns out it’s a joke account by some Krister Johnson. Several people have already copied the idea, but not Trump. Twitter would probably pick it up quickly if the real one tried it, but I can see him trying.

On one hand, it's a slight relief to know that all these domestic terrorist groups are already infested with FBI, just like that group that was trying to kidnap the governor.  On the other hand, the FBI's been known to permit its infiltrated groups to do violent crimes when that better suits their long-term goals, such as for example that time they started a war between the black panthers and organization US and set up violent confrontations between them to get members of both groups killed and/or arrested.

It's funny and relieving that Trump has been banned from his primary social media platforms (And thus one of his primary tools used to stoke the insurrectionists has been taken away from him), but I'm very concerned about calls for domestic terrorism laws. They seem okay on paper, but laws are only effective if enforced properly. At least in my area, the mask edicts don't mean anything because the police collectively choose not to enforce them around here. And I live in California, run by a guy who seems to be taking corona seriously instead of letting his dipshit son hold maskless birthday parties and smugly post about it on instagram (Hi Doug Deucy of Arizona)

The cops let the insurrectionists in by opening the gate, they put up notable weaksauce attempts to rebuke them when face with an active, aggressive mob, and actively took selfies with them. All of these are things I've seen in video clips circulating on twitter. The feds are arresting them after the event, yes, but compared to the protests by disabled people when the republicans tried to take away ACA, there is a very notable difference between the treatment the cops gave them. It is true nobody got shot at those protests as far as I know of, however overall it feels like a disproportionately different response and that should be taken into account. This is because a significant chunk of cops are sympathetic to the insurrectionists. If a domestic terrorism law gets passed, it will be laser targetted at leftist movements like blm and only moderately at right wingers. It was not leftists who stormed the senate, but right wingers. There's a reason they felt emboldened to storm the capital.

Domestic terrorism laws will not be effective against the right wingers. We need a better solution.

Another thing I want to bring up--Pence refusing to invoke the 25th amendment despite the open calls to do it. This is just baffling to me. Trump threw the guy under the bus, tried to send his hate mob after him, lied about his capabilities to scapegoat him, and he just doesn't take the opportunity to remove the man from power. No matter what your politics, I feel that personally goes beyond spineless behavior and feels more like slathering yourself in fresh blood and barbecue sauce and laying down in the middle of nowhere for the wolves to eat you.

This does make sense to me.

Trump as he is now, has more or less been declawed. He's lost his support in government.

The 25th amendment isn't specifically MEANT to remove a president from power. It specifically has safeguards intended to stop that. Its reason is generally to provide a path for a transfer of power when a president is still living but disabled in some way that would prevent them from doing their job. It was specifically put in place for the sort of situation where you might see a president in an extended coma or something similarly disabling. Using it to remove a healthy and present president from power is simply not intended. It's possible within a technical reading of the words, but it's still difficult to do. But, it's a big step. And there's no telling how much more damage that sort of act would do. Given how unstable things are at the moment, I can see Pence not being particularly fond of the idea of lighting another match. That, combined with the fact that Trump's term ends in 11 days.

I can understand the calls for using the 25th. I can sympathize with it. A part of me even wants to see it. But I also fully understand the hesitation to use that extreme of a measure, even now.

With less than two weeks to go, what is the worst it can happen? Is not like he could start a new war or change any laws..

He can probably try to get messages out through others. I wouldn't be surprised if he pursued shadier avenues of contact or had people send out messages for him. Trump is likely incredibly desperate and is making calls all over the country begging social media platforms to give his account back or to let him onto them.

Plus Biden's inauguration is still on the horizon. Security will be amped up and they probably will put up more of an effort to make sure the insurrectionists don't try to attack Biden. If only because the guy running them was pretty much told to leave gracefully or by force after what happened. They know consequences will happen if they let anything like the 6th happen again.

They're apparently planning another armed attack on the 17th., and another on the 19th.

EDIT: OK, his email provider has also b& him so that he can't send messages to his followers.

Well, he has the nuclear codes, and at one point they were talking about an executive order (? or something) so that federal anti-discrimination laws no longer take "disproportionate impact" into account. That's a pretty big deal in the application of the law.

PS: Wasn't rednecks. Looks like a lot of nice white middle class people.

I really dont think he would start a nuclear war over an election.

Well, I hope no one is that deranged.
