If nothing else materializes then I'll throw together an IRC room with a Mibbit link so we can get as many bay12ers as possible.  Historic moments are best experienced with others.

I mean, they're humanoid and, being out in the ocean, probably outside the borders. The GOP wouldn't even want them in the country, nevermind legalizing any economic exploitation of them -- they'd look the other way to the horrible cruelty and under the table farming, but there's no chance of them legitimizing the practice.

The dems would probably require a consent contract or something. They might not criminalize trade in mermaid bone, so long as the species wasn't an extinction risk, but I can't see them supporting wide spread commercial farming.

Now, libertarians? They'd be all for it. That's the one you want if you want to commercialize mass murder and sophont scrimshaw.

Ah, but you're forgetting about the EEZ - or, if certain reps had their way, the Ronald Reagan Exclusive Economic Zone. They'd totally be for legitimizing it -- empowering themselves through gainful Economic activity.

(This is all contingent on them being close enough to the shore, at least.)
