What frightens me most about this dumpster fire of a presidency is the outright hostility to truth.

I hope you were bothered by Obama's war on whistleblowers, then?  This is not unique to Trump.  It's just more obvious.  He does mostly the same things as every previous president.  He's just really, really bad at selling it to or hiding it from the public.  Not saying this to make Trump look better.  It just needs to be understood that Trump is not the problem.  He's just the next step in the direction things have been moving for a long time.

Nitpick - I'd argue that it isn't that Trump is bad at hiding his lies and corruption. He has found a way to weaponize them, to play the scandals and erode norms (plus get attention), which is even worse.

EDIT: Honestly, at this point, I half expect them to wheel out Miracle Max to announce that he's only "mostly dead". When asked how low his blood oxygen had dropped, the doctors evaded the question. When asked again if it dropped below 90, they responded with "It didn't drop into the low 80's." Which is a diplomatic way of saying yes.

I'm surprised nobody seems to be considering the possibility that Trump does not actually have anything and this is a giant ploy for sympathy by showing off how he BEAT THE VIRUS!

This was considered early on, but there's too much corroboration for that to be realistic at this point. There's an actual and traceable pattern of infections among others, the leaks that are coming out of the White House don't make Trump look good regardless of his outcome, and Trump has never ever in his fucking life wanted to cancel rallies.

The idea of this as a galaxy brain plot was pretty doubtful to begin with - at minimum, it's an extremely high-risk play with the election so soon and voting already started. He'd have been better off "getting covid" in May when he was already hitting his floor, and recover for the Fall "along with the rest of America".

I'm sure he'll try to play off how it wasn't a big deal if he lives, can still form sentences, doesn't have a mental breakdown, and isn't couped by Pence in the meantime. But this already looks pretty bad for him no matter how he plays the comeback phase, if there is a comeback phase. Hell, even if this were fake it might risk a Pence coup, though I don't think Pence's instincts are quite that sharp.

To be honest my impression is he's super unhappy about being in the hospital. Reports claim he's been very critical of those speaking on his behalf to the media (which seems like him). It punctures his macho image; he was never one to wear masks or get temperature checks, he made the people around him do that. Now if the rumors that the video he tweeted of himself was edited to remove his coughs is true, that's more evidence for that theory. As is the fact that the signing he was doing in a video (to show he was well enough to be doing "work") was on a blank piece of paper.

That said I see where you're coming from with it. Honestly if you were to take everything they've been saying at face value, you would be forced to conclude that they are committing medical malpractice via the administration of dexamethasone since it's not suggested for cases lasting less than a week (and this was revealed on Friday, mind!), much less moderate cases in people about to be released. The most coherent explanation would be that it is all entirely a lie. But at this point it would require too many other assumptions to be true to be likely.

What his health actually is, though; no idea. But I think it's not unlikely their attempt to project normalcy and strength will nearly kill him. It's normal to start feeling "better" for a day or two, right around day 8, 9, 10. Happened to Boris. For people with very serious cases, it's extremely common to very quickly go from "feeling like I'm recovering" to being on a ventilator around the 10 day mark. But assuming he showed symptoms on Wednesday (as implied by his doctors yesterday), that would be something like this coming friday...

Er, semi unrelated: New York's Mayor will ask the state to shutdown 9 neighborhoods across Queens and Brooklyn on Wednesday, as cases there mount and positivity rate has exceeded 3% over the last seven days. This is linked to low compliance with restrictions, as well as weddings and gathering associated with ultra-orthodox jews during the high holy days (possibly related: Israel is also undergoing a second lockdown). More limited restrictions will be put on 11 other neighborhoods also experiencing higher positivity rates. 20 zipcodes (of the city's 146 total) will be affected.
