So for what it's worth the flying to Reed was actually just a few minutes ago (I live within visible range of the chopper route). He seems to be walking okay, according to local live footage.

(ETA: And while we're at it, our entire modern food system runs on eugenics and I can't emphasize this enough. It's an incredibly novel and fascinating definition of "doesn't work" that you have there.)

Modern genetic research says it wouldn't "work" because you can't eliminate carriers of recessive traits from the population because everyone is a carrier for at least one genetic disease. So eugenics "working" just involves forcibly euthenizing people who express the traits, forcibly sterilizing the relatives of people who express the traits.

The Perfect is the enemy of the Good. Instead of euthanizing or sterilizing anyone who possesses a single undesirable gene, just offer scaling tax incentives relative to the quantity of undesirable genes possessed. People who are highly likely to make really fucked up sick kids will have to pay more if they choose to do so. Conversely, people who are likely to make relatively healthy kids will receive a tax break if they choose to do so.

You don't have to make the world a perfect place. Just leave it better than it was when you got here.

News footage makes it appear to be a precaution since he was still up and walking around, looking more or less like he always does.
