If you mean between nomination and Election Day, yeah that’s a grey area constitutionally. While there are procedures in place (sometimes it’s more of a past precedent thing than legal) for when it happens to Reps. and Senators, those don’t typically have a running mate in the VP sense, so, it doesn’t answer the question for that specific time frame. The closest though is probably Governor as they sometimes have their Lt. Gov pick as a running mate, but how that is handled may vary from state to state.

Put simply, it’s a grey area with no real precedent and even the closest precedent with Governors might not even solve it in the first place. The most obvious solution is to have the VP pick go, but the obvious problem there is that the VP pick isn’t the one people voted on during the primary (might be a bit more palatable if the VP is an also-ran from the primary) which may produce issues of its own. It’d probably be a constitutional crisis in the truest sense of the word.
