Things that are New are bad things to guess about based on the name alone. As hinted at by Scriver, (Old) Zealand is in Denmark

Dutch, not Danish. Most of Holland was reclaimed from the sea however. Hence, Zealand.

There is an island in Denmark called Zealand. However, New Zealand is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland (which the English call Zealand), which is a scatty patch of land, a lot of which is below sea level, a common problem in Holland.

EDIT: also not to be confused with The Principality of Sealand.

There were very few things I wanted to pronounce when I went there.  Anything more complex than "øre", "kartoffelmos" or "Billund" I probably forgot quite quickly.


(I knew about the Nederlander one - and I count "Afsluitdijk" amongst my remaining reasonable pronunciation from that locale -  but given we were talking of Greenland it was more obvious to reference the Dansk one.)

Huh, and here I thought that English was the only language where the letters used to spell words only faintly gave tangential indications of how it should actually be pronounced. Live and learn.
