Remember when everyone was losing their minds over the Obama-era shutdowns about what would happen to the US' credit rating if it went on too long?

How quaint that all seems now.

Was a boxing glove seriously in there? Unless it was some sort of collectors edition or Muhammad Alis glove or something, it seems like an utterly silly thing to have in there.

It was supposed to have been worn by some Brazilian MMA fighter.  But even if it was worn by Muhammad Ali or something, you can't deposit in a bank or really even claim it's worth the remaining $37,000 like that...

The credit rating did get knocked down a peg and even though people freaked out about it, we ended up with 'meh, this isn't so bad' since it was more the credit rating people saying 'Stop acting like children dammit!'.

Incidentially, they are threatening a credit rating decrease again this time (which barely even got mentioned) which makes me wonder if the credit rating would be a real threat or if it's just more 'Stop acting like children!'.

A glove worn by Muhammad Ali probably would get that much. Though, unless he had some sort of proof that it really was worn by said MMA fighter, he could easily have bought it from walmart or wherever.

edit: CNN just mentioned those details verbatim. It's one of those 'real life is stranger than fiction' things and just shows how bizarre and shady the whole thing was. Not sure if the poll rigging was against the law, but its definetly shady as all hell. It also seems very, I dunno, 19th century to me? Just hearkens back to the corruption of that time.

In Obama's day they were saying business lending rates would be fucked and that it was an actually big deal for the economy overall.

But this time around, nary a peep about it. So yeah, makes you wonder what it actually impacts...or if the global financial machine realizes there's no point in threatening Trump.

And it seems like the economy didn't even blink at the credit downgrade, which is why it's coming off as 'Please stop acting like children dammit!' than an actual threat. If they threatened to knock it down several pegs rather than just one, maybe it'd be an actual threat.

edit: Maybe if they threatened to knock down the Trump Orgs credit rating, Trump would listen, then again, the amount of trust banks have in the Trump Org is exactly Null (or z--- if you will), none of them want to deal with it. Besides, that's not how those credit rating things work.

Besides that, poll rigging was something that Trump specifically said was definitely going on when he was campaigning. The obvious implication was that he believed polls were being rigged against him, but I remember thinking at the time that he was probably leaving the wording ambiguous because he was the one doing the rigging in his own favor.

In response to Pelosi saying she wants the SOTU postponed, Trump cancels her foriegn travel. Does he have the power to actually do that (he did concede that theres nothing stopping her from flying commercial)? I mean, I know the President has full control over foriegn policy, but being able to outright alter a congressmembers schedule? I don't recall that ever happening, much less publicly. Sure, there could be times when the President doesn't want congress members to make a foriegn trip, especially if there is something sensitive happening, but given the separation of powers, it really doesn't seem like the President actually has that ability.....

The article mentions that theres speculation that the trip may have been postponed anyway, but that doesn't make what he's trying to do any less childish.

edit: I guess he can deny the military aircraft? Again, it doesn't make it any less childish, especially how it's playing out publicly.

Earlier we had burger king on twitter ripping on the predisent and saying they won't be able to serve hamberders anymore, regular hamburgers only, which the pornhub twitter promptly responded with a "daaaaaaaaamn" because why not have them teasing predisent trump in 2019 before finding out the bit about a walmart bag of cash and a boxing glove poll rigging payment by cohen?

Commentator is saying that the President does have the power to cancel or curtail a congressional delegation because they're using military aircraft. I can see circumstances where it could be used, but not in this childish fashion.

It's times like these where I reaffirm my theory that 4chan hijacked the election and put Trump in office purely for the memes.

Apparently she was scheduled to leave this afternoon and it'd be over the Congressional recess next week (which I'm not sure is cancelled or not). As a matter of political optics, it probably should have been postponed, but this tit for tat is just taking Trumps childishness to a whole new level.

You give them way too much credit.

I wonder if even 4chan has gotten uncomfortable with all this, since the memes are getting all too real and the high has worn off.

Judging by my friend who inhales those memes on a daily basis.....it hasn't. They've just concentrated their high octane memes and are getting so high on their own nonsense they're going insane.

Unlikely. He's still producing liberal tears, after all, and 4chan (well, /pol) works like the rest of Trump's base: the only way they see themselves ever winning anything is if the liberals first lose it, because that's how zero-sum thinking and direct causation interact with profound feelings of inadequacy.

Weren't they already high on their own nonsense and insane? Saying they're more insane isn't saying much.

I guess this is what frumple was referring to earlier. Not neccesarily Great Depression level dire, but it'll be a self inflicted wound that could have been avoided. Then theres the debt ceiling limit sometime this summer, if the shutdown is still happening then, who knows.....

Aide: "Mr President..."
Trump: "STAR WARS!"
Aide: "...Mr President, people are noticing the shutdown.  At first they were joking about how little seemed to change, supporting our small-government platform, but now things are changing rapidly.  Your polls are plummeting."
Trump: "I know exactly how to deal with this.  I'm the best at this.  You just bring the workers in anyway, say you'll pay them later.  Always works!"
Aide (considering resume): "Ah, right.  So I presume we'll bring in specifically the people who directly impact their lives in the short term, to maintain the status quo as long as possible."
Trump: "Yeah, yeah, and the Interior Department"
Aide: "Interior Department?"
Trump: "My friends say there are oil rights to sell in the Gulf.  Have you seen the Gulf?  It's huge!"

Trump: "No wildfire prevention though, pff"

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/01/trump-recalls-50-000-employees-who-now-will-work-without-pay.html

Combined with everything else...  yeah, things seem particularly crazy this month.
Trump's base *is* actually hurting a lot in the polls, recently.  I don't know how /pol/ is feeling, probably still laughing maniacally at the idea they had anything to do with this.  Meanwhile his actual base, Republican voters, were annoyed that their tax returns could be late.  Not to mention all the farmers who are having trouble getting their loans and grants.

It's kinda amazing.  The entrenched red-state rural voters who always demand less government, finally got an object lesson in what the federal government does for them.  If anything is going to change their minds, I think this was an important step.  If the Republicans had actual control of the presidency, there's no way they would have let it happen, heh.

Edit:  Oh and reminder that no money whatsoever is being saved by all this, all employees are (well, by all precedent) going to be payed when it's over.  There's even precedent for them getting payed double.  In some cases, states are hiring furloughed government employees to do the work anyway: AKA possibly getting payed three times.  Captain Tagon would be proud :P

Edit2:  Also less important than tax returns and oil drilling?  School lunch programs.  Which isn't *directly* racist, but... nah I'm kidding, he just doesn't care.
