I mean, all that would happen is that video evidence would be inadmissible. You'd have one generation that still thinks it's hard proof, like how old people today think that the news on the teevee is reliable because its on the teevee, and the next one that just sort of knows better.

Then we'd figure out some new method of proof.

We'll basically need some tamper-evident way to tie hardware to media. Hardware we can analyze and check for manipulation.

Good thing every printer everywhere has a secret government-created code that ties everything it prints to that printer.

I'm sure they haven't secretly continued with other forms of media. They'd never.

Exactly! :)

We clearly have nothing to fear from our wonderful government. Carry on, fellow citizens!

No. That requires internet access to work.

Not all devices can or should be on the internet.

That, and others--- yes.

As for why internet access is a showstopper here:

Suppose you are a news crew.  You are filming a story out in timbuktu. There is no cell coverage, and it is rainy, or otherwise not servicable for satellite uplink.  You need local-only camera processing.  Blockchain tech needs the rest of the blockchain processing aparatus (which is distributed over the planet, via the internet) to do its authentication and paper trail thing.  Your recordings thus, could not be authenticated as "real", and not the product of deep-fakery.

What you really need, is a deep watermark fingerprinting tech. Something that deep fakery would have great difficulty incorporating. Say, some specific and unique identifier metadata about the CCD array inside that specific camera or something, coupled with a database of unique signatures maintained by the manufacturer.    (I am thinking some kind of eliptical curve based symmetric key crypto, where the quirk of the CCD is used to generate the secret key, and the corresponding public key is maintained by the manufacturer.  Editing the image would result in invalid metadata, indicating the forgery.)

Apparently some islamist rebels tried to burn down a library in Timbuktu recently. Lost about 2000 manuscripts. :(

There's also an American ISP called Timbuktu Wireless.

Edit: they appear to offer internet service via cellular data. 100+ dollars a month.

Edit2: by recently I mean circa 2013.

I was joking :P

But my joke feels upstaged by the thread suddenly turning into an advertisement for an internet-controlled vibrator, and an ISP.

Granted, it's not quite the same thing, but the same principle is at work: don't replace things that work with something which has little improvement and massive downsides just because it's more "advanced." (Of course, no one would buy most of these things if people did that).

So apparently Manafort's back in the news? Seems to have decided, for some massively goddamn stupid reason, to lie to investigators or whatev' and consequently violate his plea deal.

Congrats on doing the exact wrong thing again, MF.

Interested to see the specifics, apparently they are going to say what he actually lied about soonish?

Saw something about that and something about possible Manafort pardon, didn’t catch the details though. Still, really dumb to go and lie and break the plea deal.

Edit: It appears to be not one lie, but many or several. https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/26/politics/paul-manafort-court-filing-russia-investigation/index.html

Looks like it might have something to do with Julian Assange. Perhaps Manafort was the go-between that got the DNC emails from Russia to Assange? If that was done while he was Trump's campaign manager....hoo boy.
