Because essential stuff like police officers do get paid and the military still gets paid. Same for federal workers, non-essential people get furloughed and non-essential operations and stuff get put on hold.

Yes, if it lasts a while, people would start having problems because cash, but a shutdown hasn't lasted long enough to get to the point where people are protesting with torches and pitchforks.

So Trump apparently managed to tweet something and disrupt a deal to prevent a government shutdown? What did he do this time?

Also, the republicans control every branch. If they shut down the government it's because they want to do it.

He said that he wanted CHIP to have permanent funding, not a short term 30 day one (which is what's in the CR, unless he misunderstood it), then he later made another tweet saying that he supported the current CR otherwise.

The House probably has the Republican vote to pass, but Democrats in both the House and Senate are making a stand on DACA and a permanent CHIP funding and are making a stand and willing to shut down the government over DACA. Plus, some Republicans in the Senate are saying that they won't vote for it for other reasons.

While both sides are going to accuse each other, I'd blame both sides because actions by both sides have led to this situation which has repeated.

Just like how if someone is holding you hostage, you're just as bad as they are for not immediately paying in full.

Unless I missed something, isn't it still basically tea partiers holding a gun to the head of the country to exact concessions? Last I noticed the major hangup to getting at least yet-another-CR through was mostly freedom caucus critters, which are close enough to tea partiers for government work. Just dunno how well concessions describes what they're after.

... though part of that uncertainty is because I've forgotten what the hell they're screeching about this time. Eh.

Most of the Freedom Caucus were tea partyiers that came in the 2010 and 2012 elections, so, yeah, it’s pretty much the tea party faction still holding things up. There’s also some Senators who are unofficially part of that who either rode the same wave and/or have a similar ideological bent.

It's called an ideological commitment to destroying the government, on top of the decades of media manipulation coming home to roost and probably a dozen other things. Turns out when you put a bunch of people who have neither the intent nor capability to govern in charge of governing things, they have trouble governing even their steady sabotage of america's capability to govern itself.

It's at lot easier to fuck up someone else's efforts than direct your own, basically. When you cultivate a talent set and organizational structure built entirely on fucking up other peoples' efforts, you tend to find out about all they're good at is fucking up people's efforts and now you're the one receiving credit for all the efforts they inevitably fuck up. Whoops.

... well, sorta' whoops. End of the day this kind of barely/not functioning government is the goal of a lot of the GOP. Spend so much time insisting government can't work and you start making yourself (into) a self-fulfilling prophecy, unfortunately for everyone around you.
