Regarding my political beliefs, I'd like to point you guys towards my signature... and add that I'm actually a member of the Social Democratic Party. If you want to put a tag on my ideology, it'd probably have to be radical* centrism.

*In the actual sense, not in the commonly used one where it is equivalent to 'extreme'.

Party names are weird so is the Social Democratic Party actually a democratic socialist party? or is it actually social democratic which is decidedly not socialism.

There is no difference between social democratism and democratic socialism except arbitrary nonsense. It's put as being different by people today looking back at a past during which no difference between the two was made. The order which you put the words "socialism" and "democracy" does in this case not actually change anything about what they describe.

That doesn't seem right. just becasue something was at one point similar does not mean they are the same thing now. I would consider myself a social democrat but that doesn't mean I'm pining for the nationalization of everything and spouting Marxist theories. I in fact am not a fan of Marxist theories even the more modern ones in my field don't appeal to me.

What exactly would you, as somebody who calls themselves a social democrat, say is the difference between social democratism and democratic socialism?

Yeah, it's pretty much flat-out wrong. Especially when you consider that here in Germany we have a hard-left party - Die Linke - which sees itself as standing in the tradition of socialism in the proper sense of the word, and has a large fraction of members openly pushing that sort of ideology. And that's not even mentioning the deep and bitter historical rifts that still are present today. Wer hat uns verraten is something those people take seriously.

Socialism means wishing to subjugate the bourgeoisie. Nationalization and markets as the exception and not the rule are necessary characteristics; after all, we should strive for a usage of the word that aligns with 150 years of Leftist thought, including Marx. Social Democracy on the other hand means accepting reformism as the most successful road to the people's welfare, and in the process giving up on revolution - whether political or economic - as a viable instrument.

If you subsume my Social Democacy under your Socialism, you end up with the weird result that there is not a single position that all those you would describe as socialist could agree on, apart from 'It's good to help the workers and the poor'.
