For example, when Yugi had that stone golem of his shatter the Moon card he'd played to lower the tides and leave Mako's monsters prone? It was early in the first season, if you want to find it. Late in the episode.

And I would keep away from that for the most part, the only reason that stuff really happened was because the rules weren't really invented yet.

This excerpt from a story that will explain how I am treating things.  Think I mentioned it earlier, but I didn't provide the specific portion.

“Huh? They’re cards and rules for Standard games,” His gaze grew unexpectedly harsh and concerned. “Didn’t you say that you’ve played this game before?”

“I-I did!” I stammered, surprised by is reaction. “It’s just I’ve never heard of Standard or the virus type card or anything like that with the version I’ve played!”

Solomon’s glare eyed me for a moment before he motioned to see my deck. Once I handed it over, he swiftly shuffled through the cards. Once he had gone through them once, he quirked an eyebrow.

“Tell me… what were the rules for the version of the game that you’ve played?”

“Well, for starters people play with 8000 life points, although that can be lowered to 4000 if you’re just doing a quick casual match. Then, you have to tribute monsters on the field in order to summon ones with high amounts of stars-”

At that the old man spasmed like he had been struck by lightning. His eyes, wide with shock, locked onto my own.

“Wait, you’ve played with those rules before!?”

“Umm… they were the ONLY rules I’ve known, since everyone used them where I was from…”

Yugi’s grandpa stumbled backwards, seating himself into the chair behind him.

“You mean to tell me that you’ve only ever played this game under the Super Expert rules!?”

“...Super Expert?”

“Oh boy, give me a moment.”

Solomon sat down to collect his wits. I was sure he was exaggerating, but then again, that kind of ham is expected with the setting. Surely it wouldn’t be that mind blowing, right?

“Ahem,” he said, pulling up a small whiteboard from under the table. “When it comes to Duel Monsters, the creator, Pegasus, decided that in order to attract all sorts of players, he would make multiple sets of rules. For the players who wanted a simple and quick game, he created the Basic rules. Only Monster cards and magic cards would be used here, and no tributing would be involved. At least that was how it was, I’ve heard talk of maybe changing the rules to include traps, but due to similarities with Super Expert rules, it has been debated.”

“Huh,” I said, paying rapt attention. Now that I think of it, that actually may explain why Yugi, Seto, and Pegasus played their 5 star and higher cards without tributing.

“Next up is Standard. For current competitive play, this is the ruleset that tends to be used. Like in Basic, there is no tributing, but now you can use 5 kinds of cards instead of just Magic cards. They are Basic Magic, Equips - which CAN double as magic in other playstyles, Virus - a form of trap in alternate versions, Basic Traps, and Illusions. These are probably the cards you’ve been finding that are different from what you know.”

Sure enough, when I used <Observe> on one of the weird ones, it turned out to be an Illusion card.

“Additionally, certain rules may apply to cards that wouldn’t be available to other methods of play. This is most common in Equips, which can be attacked since they remain on the field, and any monster that is depicted as flying or floating, which can only be destroyed through other flying monsters or by monster effects.”

“Wait… then would it be possible to, say, attack a Moon Based Equip card? And would that have any effect?”

“Well, if you have bought the special Duel Monster fields, then water fields would suffer from its destruction because of the card’s Standard only effect.”

An image of Yami Yugi attacking a moon flashed through my mind. ‘No….’

“Wait, what about monsters and attack types? Like say electricity coming from a fiend type?”

“Ah, that actually has a special rule booklet,” he says, pulling the booklet in question from under a stack of cards. “Some monsters have access to certain attack types, or gain them through spells. It doesn’t come up often due to the scarcity of field mats, though, so you have to invoke it explicitly. Oh, and it’s safe to assume that if it has a certain element in its name, then it also wields that regardless of type.”

A vision of an electric jellyfish flashed through my head. My eyebrow twitched.

“What about Castle of Dark illusions- can it ‘fall’ on your monsters and destroy them?”

“Ah, a tricky card,” he smiles and nods. “But yes, that’s its effect upon destruction. Which, combined with the rule about monsters destroyed outside of battle makes it a very tricky proposition, despite its ‘shadow’ ability extending to itself and thus making it hard to deal with even with flying creatures.”

“What about if it’s destroyed while being pinned by swords of revealing light?”

“Well, that might not matter much unless the player plays a shield spell. The delay would normally negate the destruction effect, but if a shield spell has been employed, then the ‘pinned’ effect created by the shield makes them susceptible to delayed effects.”

...making the catapult turtle gambit an actual strategy. What. That is bullshit. It’s legitimate? WHAT?

“You mentioned something earlier about ‘Standard only effects’,” I asked, only able to press forward because of Gamer’s Mind. “Are those common? And does, say, Catapult Turtle have one?”

“...I thought you said you only played Super Expert?” Solomon’s eyes became scrutinizing again.

“.I… uh…” I had no idea what to say! That I saw all of these specific plays on a T.V. sho- wait a minute.

“I saw it on a T.V. show about Duel Monsters?”

Solomon’s gaze magnified as my confidence shrank. I began to doubt myself. If there wasn’t a T.V. show about it, which was unlikely given home’s track record on the stuff, I might be in serious trouble.

“Ooooh, right,” Solomon bopped the side of his head as I sighed audibly. “For a moment there, I forgot there was a show about duelists as well as the monsters. Well, that explains these scenarios, although I would have thought that they would have explained the four play styles…”

Refuge in audacity, you are a beautiful, beautiful thing.

“I haven’t seen every episode of the series yet, so I might have missed that one?” I hedged, which Solomon seemed to accept.

“At any rate, to answer your original question, Catapult Turtle does, indeed, have a Standard only effect that allows you to sacrifice a monster to destroy another monster, though it is rarely used because the life points for Standard duels is only 2000,” he smiled warmly. “Do you have any other questions about the four play styles?”

“Well…. Do any of the Standard rules cover fusing a Mammoth Graveyard and an Arrow to ‘poison’ an enemy monster?”

“No, not in Standard…”

‘Ha! So Yami did chea-’

“But that sounds like something you can do in Expert Duels.”

‘DANGNABBIT! Wait, weren’t Kaiba and Yugi using Standard rules though at the time?’

“So long as one of them is in the appropriate spot, the special effects of the expert rules can transfer properties to them that allow them to do things that they normally couldn’t. Expert rules require a particular layout though, like this.”

As I watched him arrange a few cards, I felt a bit perplexed. It was in a sort of plus or cross shape, but it wasn’t until I remembered the episode when I realized why it was important. The layout of the cards was an exact match for the layout of Kaiba’s prototype duel disk. Which meant that they could have been using Expert Rules.

I had to sit down for a moment because this meant that Yami, for all of his ridiculous plays and strategies, had not ever cheated. Which was mind blowing because all of the stuff he did wasn’t cheating despite it by all means resembling a bunch of make believe.

"It's a pleasure being here, Professor.." you being while deciding your initial move.  "I set two cards and end my turn," you say as you set Spellbook Magician and Gagaga Shield before ending your turn.  You take note he has black swept back hair with large reflective sunglasses obscuring his eyes.

"I am not a professor, I am part of the Institude's security force.  My name is immaterial to you unless you believe you will be getting in trouble often," he responds as he draws his card.  "I normal summon Draghig, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and use the effect of Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to allow for me to special summon it to the field due to having no spells or traps."

"Burning Abyss, huh? From what I know, they're good for XYZ summons," Aya comments with a relatively low vocal level.

"I then use Foolish Burial to send another Draghig from my deck to the graveyard, allowing for me to then use Final Gesture!"  The Examiner continues.  "By targeting the Draghig that is upon the field, I am allowed to special summon a monster with the same name from my hand or graveyard, like the one I just sent with Foolish Burial.  During my End Phase, I would need to destroy the card I targeted, but thanks to Rubic being on the field I have another option.  I tune Rubic to the Draghig I had targetted in order to synchro summon Virgil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss!  And since I didn't use the Draghig I summoned through Final Gesture and did not use special summon effect, I can use its 'sent to the graveyard' effect in order to place Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss on the top of my deck.  I know how fond entrants are of using Mirror Force, so I will discard Good & Evil in the Burning Abyss in order to use the effect of Virgil and shuffle your facedown in the spell and trap zone into your deck."

"Nng!" Aya grunts as the Gagaga shield is returned to her deck.

After Virgil had played the short guitar riff that signified the use of his effect, the Examiner pointed to your set monster.  "Virgil, attack that facedown card!"  This caused your Spellbook Magician of Prophecy to be flipped, activating its effect.  What Spellbook Spell Card do you add to your hand?

I used the 'random' button on the Yugioh wiki until I landed on a card page that had an archetype.  First one I had come across was 'Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss'.

I hope this guy sticks around. Burning Abyss is a cool archetype and they have some of the best artwork.

Next turn, we can play Strength of Prophecy and Spellbook Star Hall, use Secrets to get Power, use Power to get Prophecy to 2500, send Secrets back to the deck by Strength's effect to add 500 strength, and attack Virgil with 3200 attack for 700 damage, then draw Secrets back from the deck with Strength's effect.
Thing is, afterward, what will we draw with Secrets in the second main phase? Another Power? Or do we wait? And will the next card we draw change anything?

Also, for flavor, how much should we know about Burning Abyss monsters? I'd say we be decently acquaintanced with them. A few comments we might say.
"..of the Burning Abyss, huh? From what I know, they're good for XYZ summons." And after he calls Virgil, "Called it, didn't I?"
When he targets Gagaga Shield, "Nng!" (because we have to react SOMEhow, and it could've been useful). And, on attacking Magician, "Spellbook Magician of Prophecy blocks your attack. And, with his affect, I can draw a spellbook spell card from my deck."
