A question and my plans for a thing
« on: January 24, 2017, 11:16:29 am »

I intend to, in my next non-cheaty project, do something amazing.

The plan:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

May I have some advice and stuff? I do intend to use plenty of mods to keep it varied, but... I intend to do this for a youtube let's play. I'll need things like embark suggestions based around the vanilla aspects of the game.not embark location suggestions, but general suggestions of materials and tools to bring, as well as some challenges and the likes!

Once I start, I'll be sure to keep a log of what happens

change of plans; I'm gonna make a City of Wonders, likely still with things in each layer, just not full blown cities. Or maybe ill just dig the whole dang world down to the caverns; I'm sure thats sane.

One fun thing from my mods; I won't be able to use steel equips, though I WILL have a special ultra heavy perfect hammer alloy i modded in.

You're gonna need a big military.

Clearly I'm not going straight to the circus, I'm gonna take my time, savour the chaos one level at a time

having 3-4 separate "towns" might mean you will have some pathing issues due to large distances. I once had a FB decide it wanted to go from the top cavern to the bottom cavern through a connecting cave system. My FPS dropped to a fraction of the original. You can avoid this if you close the cavern connections and all your access tunnels and stairs are enclosed. If you use large stockpile rooms, make them dead-end so nobody will want to cross it.

if you make all big areas "dead-end" then you wont have pathing fps problems. There is no problem with pathing 120 tiles away if there isnt an open area in the middle of the route. 2x2 stairways down, 3 wide main tunnels are ok, but its best to block off cavern exits that lead to other caverns if you colonize them.

You don't need much of a military for that provided you're using technology and a little exploit. I haven't settled downstairs (boring place), but conquered it and sealed it off (as well as the caverns, of course). A ballista was used to remove a couple of campers.
I think it took some 5 years to seal the place though, given that I had a limited work force.

However, there are few "reasonably normal" things that haven't been done by someone: the issue is really what you haven't done that's going to be a challenge.

Or something like each district will take care of itself, with something of a big tavern in the middle of them all. Burrows?

Holy... Youre right! And then I could go through my classic dream; Slums on the surface where cannon fodder legendary cheesemakers and filthy humans visitors dwell, the first cavern layer where millitary dwarves dwell, The second cavern where average civilian jobs are done and the likes, and the 3rd cavern, where decorated veterans and nobles hang out, along with magma stuff.

If your on a toaster, you might have an issue with that plan.
If you have all thouse layers AND you want to go to the circus...

You might burn your toast.

Particularly since the two show schedules I know about are FPS heavy. Like the legendary military, or my favorite,
Operation "Nevermore".

Archcrystal seems to have some good ideas on how to start out colonizing Hell.  A lot of other things, too, but defeating and colonizing Hell was more or less the initial step.

Well, I'm turning off all the fancy features I usually have on (Except temperature), lowering the population cap massively, and using a tiny world; While there will be less to choose from, there will still be most civs, creatures, etc, my actions will actually have an influence on the world at large moreso than normal, and the fort shouldnt brick at the start of year two. in theory. I'm thinking a 100 year history, and still plenty of megabeasts, though. I wonder how long this fort will last, i set my population cap just over the requisite for seiges, so... Updates coming when I first embark.

So far, the world has genned like

https://gyazo.com/486cfc5e4b51f780114fa08862f6ed6a

This.

Lemme tell you, that volcano in the evil area is mighty tempting... I have weather turned on still because I want evil biomes to  be... well, evil.

In the end, I settled like this;

https://gyazo.com/eca5f2d380eb3c443edfc4863f7eebd8

https://gyazo.com/7d540c0cb3ab902abbeba0fd9a5cf3b0

To those (All of you probably) who havent played with my mods, Mirka are pretty much Yeti, Nantuko are pretty much ant people, Zarekians are alcoholic porcupine paladins. This means there should be plenty of caravans as life goes on, and, since im playing as a token evil race, these 3 enemies should make for plentiful seiges.
