Frozen oceans?
« on: January 24, 2017, 06:59:16 am »

Is it normal for oceans that freeze in the winter to never have any fish ever in them? If so I'm just gonna start embarking in warm spots. After all, if my citadel of fishermen (and probably the only dwarven port town; Cant wait to create it all over again when an update with boats is introduced) cant fish, then its just a regular mining town like the rest of them. Anyways, do you guys settle by the ocean? If so, what do you typically do with it? Personally, I get annoyed at driftwood. Does anybody know great removal tips besides to place floors over it? Can it burn?

The problem is that its not the top of the ice, but the ice all the way down into the water is frozen hence all the fish die because new populations off map have to replenish it.

You can use lava to keep areas of ice warm & thawed.

Rivers funnel in fish from the river edges, and most of those fish aren't very fast (or repeated thawing & freezing has depopulated them entirely)

I think you have the right idea. Just settle somewhere along the sea where it doesn't freeze solid. Unless you have a very odd world most latitudes should meet this criteria. If you want to sea something extra awesome settle next to an evil ocean. Truly fun things happen along these coastlines.

Giant sperm whale is THE largest creature in DF.  And zombie giant sperm whales are the biggest of the big.

Undead fish don't even need to fly, they will waddle onto land because they can't air drown.

NO! What have you done!
Now we will be forced to mod in creatures based on Pokémon!
Dogs with fire-breath! Bats with venom that makes you dizzy! Turtles that spit water!
And um? I think that's mostly it. Adding fire breath to things. Maybe make things out of stone, wood, plump helmet man tissue, adding toxins, and adding extra limbs. Of course, they'll have to be tame-able.
