Sybella forced a laugh she hoped wasn't too noticeable.

"Haha, I suppose you're right! Though I probably wouldn't call my self all that normal..."

"I'd think I'm pretty normal. Healers aren't odd. Not that useful if a fight breaks out though."

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

"Normal might be the wrong word there. Most normal for a guardsman maybe. Still, we're all useful in our own ways I suppose. I know that Violet certainly proved herself today in the fight. Even if she did get hit by the magic at the end, she wasn't caught by surprise or anything like that. Simply overwhelmed."

It was likely the closest he'd get to praising any of them, so hopefully Violet would take it as such.

: "...I do not mean to contradict you, but is that not when a healer is most useful? Many of us would have died in that fight were it not for your efforts."

The swordswoman flushed slightly at Percival's words; probably the closest thing to praise she'd heard since leaving home.

"I mean a small-scale fight. If there were only a few of us it wouldn't be hard for them to go around and take me down before I can help out."

"I just hope we don't get assignments that are over our heads in the near future. The guards will surely be stretched thin."

Bragi came running after the group.

"Comrades, if you could wait up a moment! I would rather not go home alone myself, as I am rather lacking in sharp implements with which to ward off the unpleasant types that would likely take advantage of a lone guardsman."

Violet waited for the latecomers to catch up, secretly annoyed that they had taken so long to decide. They could have been halfway back by now!

At least, she thought it would be halfway. She hadn't quite managed to commit the local area to memory yet.

"You'll want to learn to move faster in the future. If you act indecisively like that in battle, you may find yourself bleeding on the ground before you realize you're under attack. Trust me."

He reached up and gently touched his eyepatch, before shaking his head and turning back to Violet.

"Miss Violet, I must say. I was impressed by how well you managed to handle yourself out there despite your impairment. I consider myself lucky with only having lost one eye and not using a weapon that requires a solid grasp on distance. How long have you been training to reach that skill level?"

He knew that he had spoken somewhat harshly towards her earlier, with his comments about her keeping up or dying, but the fact of the matter was, she was more skilled with her blade and no sight than he felt he was with his magic and half his sight. Any tips he could get from her could only help.

Violet managed to hide her grimace due to long practice in dealing with her mother.

: "I have been training most of my life, one way or the other. My eyes have never worked, so my other senses grew stronger to compensate, to the point that I could navigate my home unaided without undue difficulty. Even so, it took a lot of dedicated practice to attain even basic proficiency. Three years, if I remember correctly. Having even a single working eye would most certainly have helped."

"Ah... Yes, I see. Still, I was impressed. It is good to see that there were no mistakes being made when they accepted you into the Guard."

: "...Mister Winston, may I ask about the nature of your inquiry? Are you responsible for overseeing the guard's hiring decisions?"
