Sadly, that dwarf is very, very dead. I just didn't think he was worth saving.

An Evolution Arc would be intriguing , if somewhat unnecessary. Natural selection could be performed by gobbos. Of course trained Marksdwarves won't pass on inherent Marksdwarf abilities, or strength gained through training - Lamarckism is an invalidated theory. If that dwarf was inherently strong, however, they might just pass it on to the next generation.

This is such an interesting topic. It eminds me of my Bio classes.

Excert from bio assignment:

Plants are first believed to have evolved Third day of Creation

I also liked some of my answers to the examining the latolie footprints packet . . .

Darwinism? Bah! This is Dwarvinism!

Brilliant. :D

It is all a bit random though, random is good, but not for everything. I would like to see a more logical evolution, i mean, letting all your dwarves engrave for a year pretty much makes them superior in every way regardless of "genetics". The only thing standing in their way is "mood", i mean, forget evolution, seeing one to many vermin they detest (or something similar wich negatively affects mood) is in the end pretty much the only thing that could wipe out an entire civilization if it were up to dwarves. I'm sure that if hypothetically you are ever able to generate a world without dwarves, its not because they weren't "strong" enough or "agile" enough, its because of one big hysterical mass suicide starting with one dwarf complaining about something trivial like "flies".

Only problem is that the dwarves can't pass on any sort of genes, ect. Each dwarf baby is identical, except for their names, and even these are chosen completely randomly. Any sort of evolution requires both capacity to change, and persistence of changes, neither of which occur in dwarves. Thus, they are doomed to remain stupid forever. Or at least until Toady performs some divine intervention and codes smarter dwarves.

... dwarves trained to wrestle, are lazy and less likely to malancholy will have higher chances of survival. So these might survive longer.

I think it pretty much revolves around what the dwarf says to the mayor when he walks onto the map. Let's take two dwarves who both have Novice Cheesemaker skill:

A: I'm a Cheesemaker!
(Gets dumped in the magma)
B: Uh ... I'm a Mechanic!
(Is chained to a Mechanic Workshop but at least he survives immigration)

So perhaps the habit of dying your beard red to make you look like a mechanic makes a dwarf more fit for survival?
