"I'm not convinced. Besides, I can use the gold to go buy a building or something and not have to go back to, um, 'special acquisitions.' That's what people do, right, just open an inn or whatever?"

"You would need to find a business for sale, or find land for sale, purchase it and build it yourself. Then hire employees, and manage the flow of coin and the petty everyday problems such business always have. Thieving employees, problematic patrons, lazy suppliers, cutthroat competition. Keeping an enterprise going is difficult."

[SOLDIER First]

”The point being, that's a shitty idea and you should spend the money on something more important, like family or whatever. Maybe you could use it to find your sister. I don't know.”

[Chevaleresse]

"What do I do if I stay, then? Other than be the target of some insane magic-hater who thinks this shithole should stay the way it is.

And that sister is the only family I've got that I give a damn about. The rest aren't getting so much as table scraps from me."

"Continue your studies and use the new connections we make to search for your sister. If you feel so confident you will be exposed by this coup, the extra exposure means your sister will catch wind of your whereabouts if she happens to be as crafty as you are."

[SOLDIER First]

”If you stay, you try to live long enough to learn magic. I mean, I don't even know what the fuck my plan is after this, except for a vague Step One that I've had for a while."

"Then screw them. Focus on that sister. It doesn't really matter as long as you know what you're doing."

[Chevaleresse]

". . . Damnit, I don't know what I'm doing. She was always the one good at sniffing out secrets and finding people, I just steal books and read some of them. I know she's out there, I could be so close, but I can't find her. And if she's smart, she'll stay away from me if I'm an obvious target." Ava was sounding increasingly disconsolate, almost petulant as she spoke.

[SOLDIER First]

”...Hey." Caius makes like he wants to pat Ava's shoulder, but retracts his hand midway. It looks kinda dumb.

”Uh... I can help you find her. If you want. I mean, I don't know what good my one eye will do compared to both of yours, but..." He chuckles, with an actual, tangible note of humor in it?? ”Two heads and all that, right?"

[Praefectus Screptum]

Dale made an elaborate, rather sarcastic show of counting on his fingers.

"I can't remember exactly how many but I'm certain we killed a few of that Santero guy's men outside. I know for sure I shot one."

  "As for being a mercenary, I've done this a year or two, here 'n there."

"An year or two, hm? I can respect that, it isn't an easy job. And people usually drop it after a few months."

[SeriousConcentrate]

  "When you're from Thalis, this is pretty much the only line of work available. Can't really be a farmer, or a miner, and you're slightly more reputable than a bandit. Not like there's much worth stealing down there anyway, know what I mean?"

"Yeah...Can't say I had much of a choice either. Sometimes you just wanna lean back and relax, but your surroundings don't let you do that. So you might as well get paid while doing something about the issue."

  "Is that so? Where are you from?"

"Brihnor. I used to live in a small town, but we had to deal with brigands."
