Where on Earth would a fortress thrive?
« on: January 17, 2017, 07:22:50 pm »

I am curious where here on Earth would a fortress not just survive, but thrive?

Almost anywhere honestly, except the southwest, everywhere else has plentiful water, fertile land, and access to varied resources.  But the southwest is mostly miserable desert.

Ozark Mountains.  Plenty of lead for barrels and mugs, caves galore, a thriving dwarf wine industry, and a history of mayhem!

Anywhere really. Dwarf fortresses can thrive on glaciers. I feel like the Rocky Mountains would be good, because they're mountains, but again, fortresses don't really need anything. Unless I guess you keep the whole underground cavern situation like in real life. In which case the only thing you really need is dirt and water, and all the rest of the things they need they can import just fine generally. Unless again you limit the amount of dwarf caravans to the amount in real life, then again that means there's some actual limits. So if there happen to be any good places in the United States with lots of flux stone, iron ore, coal, water, and dirt, then I'd say there.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

All I need to know is that wherever there's forest, there are elves.

Also, is there a US map someone made for 43.xx?

I imagine if dwarves settled in the Olympic Mountains they would soon give up due to lag from too many trees. . .  :P

The Rockies, and specifically the foothills of one of the dormant stratovolcanoes like Rainier or Baker or Hood.

Yosemite might be good for hunting and / or assembling an army of tame animals.

Hawaii would be interesting for sure.

I think this question is too interesting to limit it to the U.S. alone.

Though, now that I think about this it just amazes me that no matter how many different earth locations I try to think of, I can remember some embark from my past that manages to capture the essence of that location. And to think that world generation is one of the oldest and least updated features of the game.

To bring it back, I bet Niagara Falls would be a particularly spectacular place for a fortress. I can just imagine a hidden drawbridge behind the water, accessible only during winter when the river freezes solid.

Damn.

From now on, it won't be the US anymore.
It'll be the freaking world!

Europe would be mainly full of elf tree lovers so id say probably closer to the french alps, france is a little more open & less dense with trees with a tiny bit of contact with the Mediterranean where id think most of the humans would hang out.

Thats to say if we converted the real world into a DF map.

Anywhere really. Dwarf fortresses can thrive on glaciers.
Player forts can, but they prefer not to.

The standard advice is near river or lake, with shallow metals, no aquifer, and warm climate.

The last one practically cuts down on some interesting locations, such as the Ural mountains in Russia. Requirement of no aquifer does hamper settling on swamps as well, despite their at times iron-rich content.

Perhaps the foot of Himalayas would be good place? Not sure if they have interesting minerals, however...
The mountain ranges in central Africa would be good for diamonds,  I guess.

Of course, player other wants to build somewhere flat, so Netherlands might be good site for hillocks.

Now to figure out where goblins would live.

A dark fortress ruled by a demon that nobody trades with?  Seems like there are a number of possibilities on that one.
