Bio: The Wilson family. If one were to list the commoners that attained great wealth in the aftermath of Uhambra's sweeping social changes, Marina Wilson would have to be within the top 10. She parlayed her success at being one of the city's finest clothiers into a vast business empire built on fashion. One can find M.W.-branded clothing in Uhambra's most exclusive stores, and even beyond the city limits. As something of a local celebrity, few details of Marina's personal life are secrets from the public.
One such secret: her eighth granddaughter, Violet. By some quirk of fate, she was born completely blind in a business where visual appeal is almost everything. It was a strange mixture of shame and pity that led Marina to keep Violet's existence a secret from the world in general; she was given the finest tutors (paid extra to keep their mouths shut, of course) and servants waited on the blind girl hand and foot, yet she was never allowed to leave the grounds of the family mansion without a heavy escort (typically with the entire family on one business trip or another) and she was kept out of the public eye as much as humanly possible.
As Violet grew older, she became more and more skilled at using her other senses to compensate for her lack of sight while simultaneously growing increasingly frustrated with her life-long confinement. She asked for (and received) self-defense lessons, using the rationale that if she were ever (heaven forbid) lost on her own, she'd be able to fend off would-be thieves and rapists. Finding these sessions immensely enjoyable, Violet requested further training in the art of swordplay, rationalizing that it was a sort of noble occupation and would make for an excellent exercise regimen. Though the "swords" were nothing more than lengths of wooden pole wrapped in cloth to minimize bruising, these lessons were some of the happiest moments of Violet's life. It wasn't long before she could reliably fight her trainer to a draw. Feeling as though she were finally doing something with her life other than sitting around in utter boredom, Violet appeared before her mother and requested permission to apply for the city guard.
Margaret, Violet's mother and now the head of the enterprise, denied the request most emphatically. "No daughter of mine", she cried, "will meet her end stabbed in the back by those murderous gang-thugs. Violet, dearest, why would you even think of doing such a thing? Those lessons of yours must have gone to your head; you are far too helpless to go running off to battle in your condition. No more lessons - tomorrow I will have that useless junk thrown away and that shall be the end of it."
Though Violet cried for some time after that, as night fell she became seized with a sort of manic determination. Swordfighting was pretty much the only thing that kept her sane these days, and if her mother was going to throw out the things she loved then she would go with it. She waited until the sounds of the mansion's occupants died away as everyone went to bed, crept from her room, retrieved the armor she wore for her lessons, stole a spare sword from the sleeping gate guard, and vanished into the night. She would prove, to herself if no one else, that she had what it took to be someone.
