On Metal Instrument Parts
« on: January 10, 2017, 09:30:11 pm »

When I Query a metalworkers' shop and try to get it to make metal instrument parts, the tasks show up red. Upon viewing their details, they shaw that they require "metal metal bars". Now, I have a pretty large amount of copper, iron, and gold bars in my fort, so I have no idea what's going on here. Can anybody give me a pointer? Is this a bug?

What version are you playing? Have you linked any stockpiles to the forge? Have you (accidentally) enabled "workshop restrictions" on a burrow? Are you able to forge other, non-instrument goods?

Are you lacking coal/charcoal?  Is there maybe a link from one stockpile supplying coal OR metal but not a link from the other?

I have no workshop/stockpile give/take restrictions set up with the metalshop. Also, there appears to be no foreseeable ways to specify "metal metal bars" in the manage order conditions menu, it that's relevant.

Has anyone else successfully made metal instrument parts? If so, can you tell me how you did it and what the job detail screen on the workshop says?

I've made metal instrument parts, yes. However, I've been unable to specify the metal to use (the details option is greyed out), so the workshop just grabs something that's available.
I believe it's just a matter of going to the workshop, select instrument parts, and then set up the orders. Since I use magma workshops I don't have any issues with fuel.

I recall there was some kind of bug with fuel in a fairly recent version in some instances, but I think it should be fixed in the latest version.

Again, what version are you running? I have no problems ordering instrument parts forged from metal in any way, including specifying the metal to use, in 43.03.

Another thing that might be causing some problems may be if the world was generated in an older version and imported, at a guess.
