Make a pump stack powered by the river to get magma to the surface to stop the river and hopefully not burn the entire jungle.

Wait, pillars can be attached to levers?

I would just dig a channel to the edge of the map and make a fortification at the edge to drain the water. ... Not that I have anything against magma!

The water's flowing upriver now.

But only sometimes...

So much fun attaching levers to pillars!!!  If you build a natural rock (no blocks) structure on the lever, you can build walls when it collapses.  I started doing this to block off cavern rivers after losing worthless cheesemakers useful, well loved dwarves removing constructions for a cave in.  Since then, I've found about a million uses for this.  Most nefarious...

Yeah, FakerFanGirl's idea worked for the most part. It lowered the river enough that the water doesn't flood the floor. The water still runs down, but I am using it to my advantage. The dwarves get regular showers now.  I have a water fall in a main stairwell, giving all the happy thoughts of mist. It still created an extremely weird river that sometimes flows up river, and other times flows down river. I have no idea how the physics work on this. It even causes production issues now, because dwarves will decide to walk across 1 level water that suddenly starts to rise and tries to drag them over a cliff.

But to clarify, the water is flowing up river.

Supports can be attached to anything that gives signal, and they will collapse on either off or an on.

Also, nothing survives a caved-in floor on top of them.

The military applications are obvious.

Wait, I thought you said you had a waterfall? How is water flowing upriver? Granted, if you use a full line of pumps across the river, the water already in the riverbed before reaching the waterfall will flow backwards until it's drained, but that's just temporary. Using a line of pumps with a sealed output pipe running off the map, and powered by a waterwheel just upstream of them, is actually my usual solution when I need to do anything in a riverbed, but it takes a very long time to fully drain the water that's already present.

I punched a hole in the river so now it is flowing torwards the hole. The weird thing is that it sometimes flows back down.

The water fall is also part of a river that is intersected by the waterfall. So if the river on the top stopped all together, there would still be a river at the bottom. It's als where I have been draining the water out in my fort.

When figuring out what you want to do, be sure you're aware of:

- How to make a portable drain. (search for it)
- Nested magma-safe minecarts can transport small amounts of magma easily. (Depending on the nature of the leak, you might be able to plug it by dropping a small block of obsidian?)

Well, by now the point is moot, with all the drains I added, water is no longer flooding the fort. In-fact, the low water is becoming an issue.

Dwarves and visitors are pathing across the river while it's shallow. Then the water decides to flow in the opposite direction. I have got 2-3 humans stuck in the river. I think I may have to wall off parts of the bank to keep it from happening.
