Hey, everybody! Some newbie questions/introductions.
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:43:50 am »

My name's Boyd the Reaver, named after my favorite Fire Emblem character of all time! I just figured it'd be nice to see if I can meet people on this board, being a Dwarf Fortress newbie and all. :D

Anything I should know about the series and fandom, please?

First off, it is not a series.

It is one game.

2. It's a fine "fandom" here.
Welcome.

3. The name's Asin.
Glad to meet ya.

Beware the elephants, carp, and giant sponges.

Nice to meet you, Asin! And sorry about calling it a series. :)

Anything I should know about the game? I'm currently dabbling into adventure mode, and am likely going to dip into the waters of Dwarf mode sooner or later.

Already gave you a tip.

Carp will maul your dwarves.
Elephants will just be nightmares in combat.
And giant sponges?

Swim away.
Or run if you can.

Also mods are fun.

Well, either way, thanks for the advice. 'Tis indeed a pleasure to meet you!

Anywhere I should start on this board?

DF General Discussion's a good place.

But hey, you're already here!

That's good.

Welcome to the boards!  I'm Dame de la Licorne (duh).

If you have gameplay questions, the Gameplay Questions subforum will get you quick answers.  Otherwise, just search around, feel free to lurk or post.

For gameplay tips, there are some "newbie tutorials" over in Gameplay Questions, if you don't want to dive in and "do" yet.  Also, DON'T pick an "undead" embark for your first attempt at a fort.  I still have nightmares about zombie carp... :o (and that was after years of playing DF).

Basically, have fun, muck around a bit, and expect to lose your first few forts, so don't get attached to them.

FYI, it's considered good form not to quote entire posts (or double-post).  If you're replying to a specific part of a post, you can quote just that part (removing everything else), or you can do as I've done, if you want to refer to the entire post. This avoids adding to the text people have to read.   :)

If you want to post something new, but no one else has replied to the thread in the meantime, "modify" your post instead of creating a new one.  Exceptions to this rule do occur (I've double-posted myself when updating my community fort), but it's a good rule-of-thumb.

Alright, thank you! I really do appreciate the advice.

Man, when TV Tropes told me how friendly this community can be, they weren't kidding. :D

And, if you're replying to the post immediately prior to your own, no need to use quotes at all, unless you're responding to a specific part of it.  :)

Hi Boyd!  I'm relatively new to the forum as well but have followed it for a couple years.  Welcome!

For Fortress mode, be sure to check the wiki but be wary of the spoilers!  Don't want to know too much at the beginning...  The wiki has all the much appreciated info on rocks, what to do with rocks, and what is a good rock and a bad rock.  Really, all you need to know :).  As Dame pointed out, don't be afraid to lose.  It is all part of the fun.

Nice to meet you Nilbert! And thanks a bunch. I'll keep that in mind after I finish up my current adventure with Girus Furystorm the Scraped Morality of Spray.

My pleasure Boyd!

Another thought I had for you.  When you start up on Fortress Mode, one thing to always keep in mind is FPS (frames per second).  The biggest killer of a good fort is that it starts to run slower and slower and slower until it just creeps along (aka, FPS death).  When starting with a fort, I like to set the world generation to pocket or small, history to short (125 years I think) and keep the rest of the settings the same (except maybe minerals).  When embarking, I choose a spot without a river/creek and make my embark 2x2 or even 1x2.  This gives you less horizontal space, but it really helps keeping the fort running fast.  I also change the initial files to set a limit on the number of dwarves.  I run with 25 migrants and a max of 100 dwarves.  A lot of fun stuff happens at 80 dwarves/citizens, so maybe set the dwarf limit higher if that is what you are after (I like to breed my way to 80).  Last, be wary of digging out huge portions horizontally.  Pathing of dwarves slows down FPS a lot; vertical is always better!
