Radius for happy thoughts from furniture/buildings?
« on: January 07, 2017, 12:03:44 pm »

Hi there,

I was planning to counteract the negative thoughts that inherently sneak in with the FUN my dwarves are having with strategically placed masterwork statues. I was hoping that the positive thoughts from running past all these handicrafts will ensure that my fort survives a little longer.

Here's the question:

To be able to place statues and other things to create happy thoughts correctly, it would be good to know whether dwarven sight has a radius. If I erect a statue and a dwarf passes it, how many (if any) tiles are allowed in between?

Btw...if someone has a specific way (aside from extensive projects, e.g. waterfall through the fort) to keep their dwarves happy, I'd appreciate other suggestions.  :)

I think dwarves get happy thoughts from putting on high-quality items. So any masterwork clothing and armour might be assigned in turn to each military dwarf.

Very high-maintenance solution, but very cheap too.

I'm not sure about the current version, but in older versions it was definitely a 1 tile radius.

I'm fairly certain that this is not the case - can you quote the exact text of the thought that gets generated when this happens?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Not right now, but I think it's almost exactly:

"He recently felt pleasure after putting on a truly splendid item"

I guess it is something that happens, then - probably added semi-recently. The question is whether it happens for armor or if it's just for clothes...

Armor - happened with artifact greaves.

And possibly with an artifact sword as well, though that could have been clothes or armor too, so probably not.

Buildings generate happy thoughts and those that require architecture are worth more. So you could build an lowly archery target (with gold bars) adjacent to a high-traffic up/down stairs and so on. A forge built with a masterwork anvil in the middle of the temple/tavern/dining hall is classy (set it to not accept manager work orders). Mostly I build things at high traffic junctions or in meeting areas.

Armor - happened with artifact greaves.

And possibly with an artifact sword as well, though that could have been clothes or armor too, so probably not.
I have four dwarfs with the same gear (same qualitity levels and only a difference is the type of cloak leather). All four have a full set of exceptional copper armor, no cloth gear, an exceptional leather cloak, and a masterwork warhammer. None have a preference for copper or hammers but one has a preference for greaves. Three feel "pleasure after putting on an exceptional item" and the fourth feels "delight after putting on an exceptional item". The leader of their squad has an artifact iron hammer and the same exceptional copper armor but no cloak, and has no "feels" thought (at this point I wonder why he has no cloak and notice he is going to Pickup equipment.. he gets an exceptional leather cloak and gains the "ambivalence after putting on an exceptional item" thought, but he likes a different type of leather). I expect they will all be happier when the clothier finishes their pigtail garments.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Related question, dwarves can see and be afraid/enraged by creatures on z-levels above/below them, will this also work for admiring objects?

I built a monument to my militia consisting of a small pyramid of statues, and while I'm happy with it being pure roleplay it would be nice if they could actually admire the golden dwarves standing over the cowering goblins.

Can't definitely confirm the clothes bit, but I can confirm crowns and also recall an amusing story about the happiest werelizard, who put on and ripped off the same two amulets each month while locked in captivity, getting new happy thoughts from the action each time.

The needs system introduced happy thoughts for clothes, favored food items, trinkets, sparring, etc. Fleeting Frames' account indicates a happiness boost might be gotten from having militia switching between civilian clothing and military uniforms, although the new wear system means even armor needs to be replaced if the militia sees sufficient action (which itself satisfies the need for excitement, I think).

Well all of my statues are in the wrong place.
