Throw the rock at a light a good distance from me, and then head for cover.

Pistol, paint, rock, diesel gauntlets (5 hours away)
You hurl the pebble at the ball just before it lands and then dive under the water and swim over to the nearest column that you can hide behind. The rock hits the ball and plinks off with a distinctly glass-like sound. You watch as the ball touches the water and the glow fades, revealing that the ball is crystalline. It sits there for a moment and then makes a strange noise, like a windchime, a clinking lyrical sound. And then, after another minute or so of silence, it makes the sound again. The other balls finish their journey down shortly after the first and begin making their own sounds, each of which is different.

move the crawler onto the wall near the light but not underneath the light.
You climb the crawler around onto the wall of the cave and angle the head to look at the things on the ceiling. From this vantage point the light is strong enough to see the ceiling's surface.
"I strongly suggest that we start moving the crawler towards the engine heart, and we could also get a closer look at whatever these things are."
Try to get a better look at the orbs while we move in, I'm going to focus on trying to tell what is it attached to the ceiling by? And is there any movement?

Description
wearing a nice suit and glasses, and keeping well groomed gives Jakie a rather slick appearance. She has a very no-nonsense personality, and speaks with a slight tunnel accent. She comes of as very cold, with calculating and emotionless eyes that remind one of a reptile.
Backstory
Jakie Rede was born in a little tunnel town right outside the city. Jakie didn't like the lack of opportunity, so she made her own, in the booze business. Being as how these "operations" weren't entirely legal, Jakie learned how to protect her interests when the need arose, and the need arose often. But, getting too greedy, Jakie lost control of her turf, was muscled out and forced to skip town. Now, down on her luck, she wants to explore, see the world, and maybe find a nice place to set up a new "operation"
You look carefully at the ceiling now that its been illuminated a bit better and find that...well...its not exactly what you thought. Across the natural stone of the ceiling, splattered like tar, is a black organic mass. It encompasses the entire width and breadth of the ceiling with swollen black nodules and thick ropey connecting strands. The glowing orbs are stuck in that stuff, some seemingly embedded but others are surrounded by organic machinery; those spidery legs you saw have no body, they just stick out of the goo like a spider trapped in amber. You can see other organic things too: some are whole or partially whole creatures others are disconnected limbs or organs. Much of the purpose of any of them is indecipherable. As per what the thing is, it could be structure or organism. Hell, it could be both.
