Newgrounds dot com thread
« on: January 18, 2008, 05:38:00 pm »

i'm thinking of putting a thread on their forums over there, but i'll need some help with the layout putting it there, as it may get buried under the massive amounts of other threads, i learned of this game from newgrounds, so it's not completely unknown there, i made an advertisement thread there (here.)

can i get some support before i make it in the morning?

Newgrounds is full of morons and 12 year olds.

IN a positive form: What is to be gained by having anyone from newgrounds know about or spread the word to their other AOL friends?

I doubt anyone from newgrounds would even consider donating.

Unless there's already an active Dwarf Fortress or general roguelikes community (however small) on the Newgrounds forums, posting advertising threads there is probably not going to help much.  You're better off aiming at forums whose target audience would be more in keeping with roguelikes.  For example, I learned about DF from 4chan's Traditional Games board, which is dedicated to tabletops, TGCs and wargaming versus video games. (/tg/ adopted roguelikes as one of the few accepted video game styles that fit in more with our crowd than the Halo gamer crowd in /v/.)

Again, unless you really think Newgrounds is a place for roguelikes...

Yeah.   Newgrounds is all about watching stick figures murder each other gruesomely, which is waaaaaay different than DF.    :p

But:  I've seen their forums, they barely type any language, and I doubt they would ever be able to get their mom's credit card to donate to DF.   Go ahead and post a thread though, I don't think it'd add anything.   There was probably a thread back when DF was first made public- just like every other forum.

Dwarf Fortress has a way of weeding out the ignorant. I've not spent any time on that forum, but if it's anything like what others have described here, I don't think posting about DF is going to help Toady much. Of course, it won't hurt either.

Well, I would think that maybe 95% of all the NG folks won't even download the game so I wouldn't really bother. Just post about DF in intelligent communities instead.

Yeah, let's not become an elitist group. Besides, surely there's lots of 12 years old who would find this game fascinating.

Lol...forgive me for not being optimistic about that statement. I wonder how many 12 year olds would pick a hard-to-understand and ascii-based game over a pretty action, 3dgfx hackandslashshootemup game considering that's what the mainstream is spoonfeeding gamers these days.
