Your favorite game soundtracks
« on: December 29, 2016, 11:50:19 pm »

I've got a thing for great game music, especially if I can program to it. No real rules here - let's talk about our favorites. Be sure to post some representative works, if possible. I'll be posting songs that make appearances in games as well as actual soundtrack entries.

Let's take a look at my work playlist. In no particular order:

I was greatly surprised when I heard some of the CKII DLC songs. I don't know how Paradox does it, but that ensured that I'll be sure to buy any further soundtrack DLC.

  • Quake 1 - A genuinely unsettling and disturbing soundtrack full of unnatural sounds, long rhythms, distorted whispers and things that aren't music. Quake 1 should have been a horror game. Parallel Dimensions
  • Touhou series - Too many to list, but there's always Beloved Tomboyish Girl!
  • Fallout: New Vegas - The radio music is pretty annoying IMHO, but there's some pretty nice ambient tracks.

How about some old classics like the themes of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2 and Cannon Fodder?

Game music I use or used to use for work (although I do get critiqued for liking "elevator music"):
  • AI War and other Arcen games with soundtracks by Pablo Vega. (Example)
  • Warcraft 2 (Example)
  • Kyodai Mahjongg. (Found the game on a magazine disk in mid 2000s, never played it, still listen to the music sometimes.)(Example)
  • Most JRPGs have some sort of "peaceful town before any bad things happen" theme. (Example(FF8))
  • Touhou and derivatives as mentioned above. (Example)
Just favorites:

AI War and other Arcen games with soundtracks by Pablo Vega.

His songs certainly pop. Just remembered I liked Bionic Dues' title theme as well.

Why, Symphony of the Night, of course!

Marble Gallery being one of my favourites, followed closely by Rainbow Cemetery, for its almost hypnotic beat.

So many game soundtracks to list. I spend a lot of my time ripping game music to use for roleplaying or just for general listening.

But I will say the two game soundtracks that have gotten the most play from me are easily Hotline Miami 1 and 2. So good!

* from the Burnout serie : Animal Alpha - Bundy
* Christian's entrance theme from several wrestling games : Story of the Year - Just close your eyes
* from Skyrim : Jeremy Soule - Dragonborn
* from the old Blackmoon Chronicles RTS : Pierre Esteve - Blackmoon
* from Final Fantasy XIII : Masashi Hamauzu - Saber's Edge
* from Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge : Pyron's Theme
* from Homeworld : Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
* from old Soul Edge/Soul Blade : The Edge of Soul
* from Soulcalibur : Sweet Illusion
* from Metal Gear Peace Walker : kojimarobotbossthingyversionofTheCarpenters - Sing a Song (spoiler video i guess)
* from Civilization 4 : Soweto gospel choir - Baba Yetu
* from Killer Instinct : Killer Cuts - Full bore
* from Metal Gear Snake Eater :  Cynthia Harrell - Snake Eater
* from Tales of Maj'Eyal : Celestial Aeon Project - Hold the Line
* from King of Fighters 96 : Mozart - Dies Irae
* from Xenogear : Joanne Hogg - Small Two of pieces
* from Rome Total War : Jeff van Dyck - Melee Cafe
* from Guardian Heroes : Rough and Ready
* from Tekken 5 : Moonlit Wilderness
* from Tenchu Silent Assassins : Battle with Onikage
* from Silent Hill Akira Yamaoka - Lisa's Theme

so many more to list, could probably go on for a few pages but i'll just stop there to avoid flooding the whole thread :D

Folks have mentioned FTL: Faster Than Light. That's a good one, though my favorite probably has to be Engi (Battle).

I love the Asura's Wrath soundtrack. Hard to pick one to share, but the main theme - In Your Belief - is a good place to start. Many of the other tracks remix parts of IYB anyway.

Darkest Dungeon is most known for the narrator, but the soundtrack is a joy to listen to as well. Case in point: Combat in the Ruins.

Undertale! Some love it, some hate it, but the music is terrific. My favorite selection is probably Hopes and Dreams / Save the World, but Battle Against a True Hero is a close second. (beware of spoilers on each of these, obviously)

May post more later but these are the ones that come to mind first when I think of solid video game OSTs.

Dark Souls 1 - Great Grey Wolf Sif. Tears ahead.

Anno 1404 - When Cultures Meet. Although I don't remember Anno 1404 very well, this piece is engraved in my soul.

Civilization IV - Baba Yetu. Every strategy gamer knows that musical piece. I prefer Al Nadda, tho.

Civilization IV - Al Nadda. Even better musical piece than Baba Yetu. Kinda sad that's not as well-known as the former.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim - Dragonborn. I personally find Skyrim to be overrated, but I can't deny the sheer epicness of this theme.

Crusader Kings II - Main Theme. Just like Skyrim's theme, pure epicness.

Europa Universalis III - Conquistador. I haven't played EUIII, but this theme is the reason why I use EUIII Music Mod for EUIV. Plus modded EUIV changes it's main theme to some Asian-sounding theme, which I don't like.
