Dwarven Pyramid vs Dragon: The Great Ceiling Collapse
« on: December 29, 2016, 04:29:28 pm »

The story begins in year 5 of my Dwarf Fortress embark.  I had decided to dwarf it up like an Egyptian and build a limestone pyramid in a yellow sand desert as a mega project. 4 long, grueling, years pass due to low fps. I have not seen a single goblin in those 4 years so the only military I had set up was a single hammer dwarf to fend off some basic threats in the wilds.  Those boring years came to an abrupt halt when the dragon known as Thali Icuniweni showed up. The dragon first ascended my entire pyramid; whose outlying structure was already built.  The dragon then proceeded to incinerate anyone in his path. I had called the dwarves back to safety save for a few.

After some extra crispy pastured animals and dwarves, the dragon decided to enter my pyramid and start tearing up the flooring.

I was then struck with a brilliant idea. Since I had no way of killing this thing normally, I came up with the idea to lock the dragon inside the pyramid via the drawbridge collapse tiny bits of my pyramid's ceiling on the dragon and hope the cave ins would kill it.  Unfortunately, the drawbridge was unlinked and some brave soul had to go and link it up.  Luckily, the dragon was just pacing back and forth (which was truly odd).  So I successfully locked it inside. (It couldn't fly which was a relief).

I then unleashed my dwarves to begin working on dropping bits and pieces of flooring from the ceiling on top of the dragon. (The pyramid wasn't a complete point because i hit the world's ceiling  >:( ) The middle bits were to be dropped on top of the dragon.

Well, that didn't quite work because the dragon was moving around a lot down there and some dwarves fell to their deaths or fell and ended up extra crispy.

So you know what they say. If something isn't working for you, you probably aren't doing it hard enough. So I decided to collapse the ENTIRE CEILING on this dragon. (The ceiling is well over 1k blocks).

After that bit of dwarven natural selection and the delightful weather the dragon was having (raining dwarves), it was finally time to drop this thing!

It was glorious. Words cannot express it HAHA.

The dragon got caught in that entire cave in and was killed instantly!  Now I have a lot of rebuilding to do considering it took out every floor below it.

Floor 2 where the clothier dwarf was made extra crispy is now looking like this:

Hahaha.

Caving in the entire map - when you absolutely, certainly and instantly have to kill all the things.

And Io, is the pyramid large - I suppose when one emulates the seven wonders of the world one doesn't do "small" :) Nonetheless....

I expected you to trap and get the dragon to guard the tombs. But now instead the pyramid will be their tomb!

PS: You can add more sky z-levels with dfhack command infinitesky, I think.

Now you can make a cool maze or something now that the space is cleared. Fill it with traps if you can, make it a proper pyramid. The traps will also help with any future guests.

Also, you have all those nice corpses too fill in there. Make sure to use metal coffins.

Perfect!
Oh, and once your done, you can go in adventure mode. Make sure your weapon is a whip, and your armor is leather.

 :o :D
Epic.  8)
Good luck rebuilding the pyramid!
I would definitely try to store the dragon corpse in some place there, maybe even directly in the entrance. And if you really have a fuckton of gold: cover the outside of the pyramid with it, because why not.

(how many unlucky dwarves did you sacrifice?)

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

I think 3 were shut out of the fortress, about about 5 or so fell to their death when i caved in tiny pieces of the ceiling. That clothier was lucky to survive the fall, but the dragon took notice pretty quick and incinerated him lol. Other than that, maybe 20 pets/animals died that i had pastured outside. Oh! and for some reason my wood stockpile is now a !!wood stockpile!! so i'm having fun. (Underground smoke)

If you have the gold in surplus, start with decorating the tombs. Then cover the tip of the pyramid in gold, maybe make an eye.

This is pretty historically close to the real pyramid construction.
You had workers, not slaves build it. While you did have a high mortality rate, they were still workers. And what did the Egyptians pay their workers in?

Alcohol.

Make sure to store the bodies of the lives stock inside the pyramid, to have mummies. I also suggest filling the place with cats.
In fact, I think I might want to play pharaoh fortress myself.

I heard a story some nut saying the pyramid was just an elaborate granary.  Maybe fill it with jugs of honey and mead instead.

Need to sprinkle masterful statues of gold and obsidian.

Do not forget gold sarcophagus.
